Two states where you might want to grab a cab instead of a rental car are Georgia and California. They tied for first in a ranking of states with the worst drivers, according to an online poll of 1,115 truckers reading Overdrive magazine. Illinois motorists came in third, followed by Maryland. Florida and Texas tied for fifth. The poll, carried in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, tabbed Virginia as having the best rest stops, Interstate 75 in Florida as the best highway and Arkansas as having the worst overall roads.

Think Your Job Stinks?

Pig farms smell, as anyone who's been within a mile radius of one knows. Mississippi is testing a new weapon in the war against this odiferous, centuries-old problem, reports the Sun Herald newspaper in Biloxi. A woody plant called kenaf is being used to filter waste water from an experimental swine facility at Mississippi State University. The system's effectiveness is being evaluated by odor panel trained by Mississippi's State. As a state official notes "there is no machine at this time that works as well as the human nose to detect odors like these." Whew.

Murphy's Law Leads to John Law

When Joey Flechner allegedly stole 185 pounds of marijuana worth $75,000 from a storage locker, he figured the pot would ease his cash pinch. Instead, the cannabis caused him to get pinched, because it belonged to the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The state used a private storage facility in West Allis, Wisc., to hide the confiscated marijuana, because federal regulations ban storing such a large quantity of an illegal drug in the workplace. Flechner was allegedly caught on videotape making off with the pot and has been charged with burglary, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
