Priorities 2000: An Arkansas View
By Gov. Mike Huckabee
Arkansas has no legislative session in 2000, so our focus will be on implementing and improving the programs put in place during the 1999 legislative session. Our state's increased emphasis on childhood immunizations, the ARKids First insurance program for children and the Smart Start program for those in kindergarten through the fourthgrade will pay off down the line in healthier, smarter Arkansans. We must continue to expand those programs. We must make sure the character education programs in our public schools are a success. We must implement the charter school legislation passed in 1999 to ensure Arkansas is on the cutting edge of education innovation in this country. We must also spend the tobacco settlement money in a way that will make this a healthier state, not just grease the pockets of those with the proper political connections, which sadly was the way we too often did business in the past.
