The third meeting of the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce picked up Tuesday where the second meeting ended: with the split between pro and ant-tax forces as wide as ever. Commission members heard six of the 34 submitted tax proposals; four of the plans called for the elmination of taxes on e-commerce. Commission members engaged in sometimes spirited debate, with staunchly anti-tax Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore sparring with his fellow state and local government representatives over the need to protect state tax revenue. The only point of agreement came early in the day, when commissioners unanimously agreed that Internet commerce should be kept free of international taxes and tariffs. The panel will hear 8 more tax proposals before adjourning Wednesday night.
