In Case You Missed This...(10/15/99)

Y2K watchers were amused by a glitch that caused a number of Maine new car owners to receive titles to "horseless carriages" in September. When computers in the Secretary of State's office processed title requests for 2000 model vehicles, the '00' in 2000 tricked the machines into turning the calendar back to 1900. Some title holders were not amused and called state authorities to complain. "I don't blame people for being upset," state title examiner Ron Rioux told the Bangor Daily News. "It's not funny after you have spent $20,000 for a new car. It was just one of those things and it slipped by the computer people."

Minnesota Has 'The Body': California To Get 'The Terminator?'

Ronald Reagan, George Murphy and Sonny Bono made the transition from show business to California politics. Now comes word that Arnold Schwarzenegger is mulling a bid for governor in 2002. The action hero has been a force in Republican politics for years, and actively campaigned for George Bush's failed presidential bid in 1992, according to the Los Angeles Times. Hearing of Schwarzenegger's interest, a top aide to Democratic California Gov. Gray Davis quipped that Davis "is thinking about starring in Terminator 3."

Ventura Tells Schwarzenegger to 'Just Say No!'

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura knows about moving from the entertainment world into the governor's mansion. And the former pro wrestler was characteristically blunt after learning that actor Arnold Schwarzenegger may be eyeing California's gubernatorial slot. "My Advice to Arnold, as a friend, is 'Continue with your movie career, Arnold -- don't get involved in it. It won't be worth it to you," Ventura said on the weekly television show "Meet the Press." Ventura and Schwarzenegger appeared together in the movie "Predator."

Yanks Boot Rangers, Bush Boots Pataki

Baseball recently was very, very good to New York Gov. George Pataki, which is more than he can say about basketball and hockey. Pataki recently won a pair of cowboy boots from Texas Gov. George W. Bush, following a wager between the two over the outcome of last week's playoff series between the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. Pataki's footwear even comes with spurs, the New York Post reports. Perhaps a subtle reminder that Pataki lost a bet to Bush earlier this year when the San Antonio Spurs beat the New York Knicks? The Buffalo Sabres' loss to the Dallas Stars for hockey's Stanley cup was yet another blow to Pataki's pride.
