A State Government Reporter's Guide To The Web: Utility Deregulation Resources

GENERAL RESEARCH

When it comes to general searches, the first place I stop is http://www.metacrawler.com. It's my favorite Web research tool because it usually loads with lightning quickness and combines the resources of several search engines, including Excite, Direct Hit, LookSmart, WebCrawler, Infoseek and Yahoo! MetaCrawler generally doesn't dredge up tangential search results so far afield as to be useless. One nice feature: A LookSmart Editor's Picks list of Web sites related to your search term sometimes appears at the bottom of the MetaCrawler home page.

UTILITY DEREGULATION

To find out where the 50 states stand on the topic of utility deregulation, I usually stop at http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/electricity/chg_str/tab5rev.html, a site maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy. When you load it, an information box containing the label "Go To Map" appears in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Click on it, and a color-coded map of the United States appears that tells in a glance which states have enacted restructuring legislation, which have issued comprehensive regulatory orders, which have legislation or orders pending and which are investigating electric utility deregulation. Click on any state, and you get a detailed history of its deregulatory progress along with pertinent Web links.
