Phil Bredesen (D)
|
|
After serving two terms as Nashville Mayor, Democrat Phil Bredesen won his second bid for governor, defeating Republican challenger U.S. Rep. Van Hilleary. Bredesen ran unsuccessfully for the office in 1994 against Republican Gov. Don Sundquist, who served two terms and is not eligible to run again. Sundquist's unpopularity and the severity of Tennessee's budget crisis buoyed Bredesen despite Hilleary's efforts to distance himself from the governor. In Nashville, Bredesen's mayoral reign was marked by significant economic growth, something he hopes can be accomplished statewide. Bredesen earned degree in physics from Harvard and started a business HealthAmerica before turning to a career in politics.
