Retired corporate executive Don Carcieri frustrated Democrat Myrth York's third bid for the governor's office, which remains in Republican hands after the departure of term-limited Gov. Lincoln Almond. Carcieri pitched himself as a political outsider and now faces a challenge shared by most new governors: a budget shortfall that in his case may eclipse $200 million. York, a businesswoman and former state lawmaker, questioned Carcieri's record as CEO of Cookson America but failed to convince Rhode Island voters that the political newcomer would fare poorly in efforts to attract jobs and reinvigorate the economy.
