Nevada Legislatures Web site ranks first

Nevada, Minnesota and South Dakota legislatures have the best Web sites for letting citizens track legislation, communicate with state lawmakers and get information about state laws, according to a California-based for-profit research group.
In its first "Digital Legislatures Survey," the Center for Digital Government said the Nevada Legislature came out on top because of a range of online offerings, including live online broadcasts of committee meetings and online close captioning for the hearing-impaired.
Nevada also is quick to post lawmakers' voting records, said Janet Grenslitt, senior researcher at the center who was in charge of the survey. She said 35 states responded to the survey.
Minnesota and South Dakota tied for second. Louisiana, Iowa and Illinois followed. Rounding out the top 10: Indiana, Utah, Virginia and Washington (tied), Rhode Island and New Mexico.
The center released the top 10 states, but did not publish the states that scored the lowest on its survey.
"Over the last few years, legislatures have made huge strides in technology advancements, not only in their own chambers, but also in their ability to communicate with constituents," Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the center, said in an Oct. 16 statement when the survey results were announced.
The center is a for-profit research group based in Folsom, Calif. that provides technology services to public and private organizations. Click here for highlights of the center's survey.
