New govs off to school

Five of the nation's seven newly-elected governors will get introductory lessons this weekend in the fine art of leading a state.
The newest state executives will meet for a National Governors Association (NGA) retreat at the exclusive Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., hosted by that state's outgoing Gov. Bob Wise (D). The NGA is a bipartisan, policy research organization that studies best practices in state government.
During the retreat, incoming governors will hear from their more experienced colleagues and NGA staff about how to prepare themselves for life in the spotlight; deal with the media; shape their political agendas; and work with legislatures.
Governors-elect who are expected to attend include Democrats Brian Schweitzer of Montana, John Lynch of New Hampshire and Joe Manchin of West Virginia; and Republicans Matt Blunt of Missouri and Jon Huntsman Jr. of Utah.
Indiana governor-elect Mitch Daniels (R) is unable to attend the retreat, said his spokesman Marc Lotter.
The outcome of the Washington gubernatorial election has not been determined, so neither candidate for that seat will be on hand.
In addition to Wise, 10 other sitting governors will attend the meeting as mentors, including NGA Chairman Gov. Mark Warner (D) of Virginia, and Vice Chairman Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) of Arkansas.
Eleven states held gubernatorial elections this year. Five of those states had open seats for governor and incumbents Gov. Craig Benson (R) of New Hampshire and Gov. Joe Kernan (D) of Indiana were ousted on Nov. 2.
