Cigarettes sold in 21 states will be self-extinguishing after a strikingly high 15 states passed new laws this year to combat smoking-related blazes, the No. 1 cause of home-fire deaths.
“Fire-safe” cigarettes, manufactured with extra bands of paper to snuff the flame if a lighted cigarette isn’t being smoked, even received unanimous approval in the tobacco stronghold of Kentucky.
In 2004, New York became the first state to require self-extinguishing cigarettes, which also are on the shelves now in California, Vermont and, as of July 1, Oregon. Seventeen more states will require them soon, with most laws taking effect in 2008 or 2009.
Even advocates of the legislation were startled by its swift progress this year.
“No one really even had to testify” before the legislature, said Richard Peddicord, assistant state fire marshal for Kentucky, where a nation-high 28.6 percent of adults smoke, according to the
Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.
After years of failing to get fire-safe cigarette legislation through Congress, advocates turned to the states, forming the
Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes and enlisting the aid of firefighters and local officials.
“Previously, the tobacco companies had been able to derail any federal attempts to pass this legislation. So we decided to go to the states, and the coalition has done that very effectively,” said Lorraine Carli, a spokeswoman for the National Fire Protection Association, a nonprofit advocacy group based in Massachusetts that formed the coalition.
The coalition provided background, such as model legislation and a testing standard, and staged public events to generate publicity. From there, local advocates pressed lawmakers.“Firefighters and fire-safety people have an entrepreneurial style about them. All it takes is one or two guys to make something happen,” said Dick Gann, head of the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Fire Research Division. “It’s no surprise that you start to get this nonlinear, exponential expansion of grassroots movement.”
Each state has used the standard established by New York. Kentucky’s push this year was driven in large part by a Feb. 6 home fire in Bardstown that killed 10 and was believed to have started when a smoker feel asleep with a lighted cigarette.
According to the fire-safety advocacy group, smoking-related fires kill 700 to 900 people and cause hundreds of millions of dollars in property losses each year.
A study of New York’s experience with self-extinguishing cigarettes by the Harvard School of Public Health found that they were far more likely to go out if left unattended and that there had been no change in the price of cigarettes and no decrease in tax revenue from cigarettes.
Most of this year’s laws give cigarettes companies a year or more to alter their manufacturing process and to allow stores to liquidate their supply of the old cigarettes and make sure all cigarettes they stock meet the fire-safe standards.
In the past, cigarette companies have lobbied against federal legislation, but spokesmen now say the industry prefers a federal standard to differing state-by-state standards. David Howard, a spokesman for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, said the company had lobbied against federal legislation previously because it failed to prohibit states from establishing more rigid standards.
The level of opposition to state laws varies by company. Howard said R.J. Reynolds has opposed state legislation. But Bill Phelps, a spokesman for Philip Morris USA, said, “We still think that a nationwide standard would be best, but we do not oppose state legislation that would establish the same standard as in New York.”
One of tobacco companies’ beefs with fire-safe cigarettes is that they may instill “a false sense of security in consumers who may erroneously believe that they can carelessly handle cigarettes without concern for starting a fire,” according to a position statement on R.J. Reynolds’ Web site.
“Calling it ‘fire-safe’ is misleading,” said Howard of R. J. Reynolds. The real problem is “the careless handling of cigarettes,” and “we don’t believe the legislation addresses the real problem,” he said.
The Massachusetts-based fire-safety group has called that assertion insulting to consumers.
Fire-safety experts say that smokers should not notice any difference in taste with the new cigarettes, which many tobacco companies prefer to call Reduced Ignition Propensity (ironically, RIP) cigarettes, and that the health risks – other than the risk of fire – remain the same.
Fire-safe cigarette technology has existed for years, and the U.S. Senate considered requiring self-extinguishing cigarettes as early as 1974, according to the Massachusetts fire-safety group.
In 2000, Philip Morris began using banding technology in its Merit brand cigarettes. In 2004, the company was sued by the U.S. Department of Justice and accused of covering up its knowledge that the Merit cigarettes, which used a different design from current fire-safe cigarettes, were actually more fire-prone. Philip Morris has acknowledged that the Merit cigarettes would not have met the New York standard. The company still sells Merit cigarettes, using an altered design in states that follow New York’s testing standard.
The six states that passed legislation requiring self-extinguishing cigarettes before this year are California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. These states enacted laws this year: Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas and Utah.

The new Safe Cigarette, May be more damaging to ones health then traditional cigarettes.I myself do not smoke, I do know a flaw when I see one. This safety feature requires a smoker to to take deeper draws, additionally one must increase the number of puffs to insure the cigarette will stay lit.I have concluded in my studies; Smoker related health issues will be on the rise in the near future.

Fact 2:
Also significant is the World Health Organization (WHO) study which concluded "..secondhand smoking doesn't cause cancer..." found online here.Excerpt:Passive smoking doesn't cause cancer-officialBy Victoria Macdonald, Health CorrespondentThe results are consistent with their being no additional risk for a person living or working with a smoker and could be consistent with passive smoke having a protective effect against lung cancer. The summary, seen by The Telegraph, also states: "There was no association between lung cancer risk and ETS exposure during childhood."And if lawmakers need additional real world data to further highlight the need to eliminate these onerous and arbitrary laws, air quality testing by Johns Hopkins University, the American Cancer Society, a Minnesota Environmental Health Department, and various researchers whose testing and report was also peer reviewed and published in the esteemed British Medical Journal......prove that secondhand smoke is 2.6 - 25,000 times SAFER than occupational (OSHA)

I'm 63 years old and have been smoking since I was 15. I have been a one brand smoker all these years and although I realize that smoking MAY kill people, I have know people that have smoked all their lives and are older than I am and have not had any health problems from the effect of smoking. I have a physical examination every year and my lung capacity is 94%. These so called new cigarettes that we are forced to purchase actually SUCK, to be blount. We as Americans should have the choice of buying one or the other. I live in Alabama and work close by in Florida and although both states are not part of the 21 states it's now the only ones they sell. I guess it will be back to the 20's and bootlegging or black marketing of the old brand of cigarettes for some of us. The minority should NOT be telling us how to try and live our lives or what cigarettes we should have to smoke. I thought this was America? When did we change to Cuba?

I would like to start off by saying that your cigarettes are not worth a **** I don't know how many people have told me that they have felt sick after smoking your fsc cigarettes and I feel like I work for my money and I can spend it as I chose to and I have smoked since I was 15 and I think that you should change them back because of the sickness ur paper is causing people and instead of working out ways to get people to stop smoking I think u should start thinking about the alcohol do u ever see someone smoking while their driving kill someone no I don't think that u have and if so send me a picture because I would love to see it. I guess since alcohol is still legal I guess we are stepping on to many congress's toes. I'm sorry if i am stepping on toes myself but I have rights just like the people that are drinking alcohol and I know my habit kills people but so does Alcohol so lets see some rules brought up about that but I guess we will never see any towards alcohol. As someone who works in a tobacco store I can tell you that every day I have someone complaining about FSC cigarettes. I have heard on several occasions of people becoming sick months after the companies went FSC. Wyoming is not a state that is mandated FSC but since so many states went FSC it has become increasingly hard to find non FSC cigarettes. We do offer a few brands that are not FSC and I hope that helps for the people that find themselves becoming sick because of FSC.

Up until about 9 months ago, whenever they would do a chest x-ray they could not even tell that I was a smoker. Today I have full-blown pneumonia, on top of the flu and ear infections in both ears (something I haven't had since I was a kid)My immune system seems to be shot as I have had severe brochitis almost constantly since they shoved these so called fire safe cigs down our throats! I think the gov't is either trying to force everyone to quit or kill us off.

I bought a carton of cigarettes about a week ago. The First cigarette that I smoked, tasted funny and kept going out. The ash from the cigarette would just fall off, and go out in the middle of the cigarette, and burned like a smoke bomb.
I can't stand them.
It is absurd to think that a cigarette would not catch something on fire, regardless even if there is a bucket of water hiding in the butt of that cigarette. Hello, its fire. That would certainly be first on my to do list for America.
But no lets screw over the public.
Why not do this, put strainers on beer cans, and bottles to suck all the alcohol out, so that the drunk driver doesn't kill millions of innocent people each year.Or better yet put antabuse in it so if they drink they could die. But that would be stepping on a few toes wouldn't it

Someone suggested that cigarette companies be sued for the manufacture of fire safe cigarettes (FSC); like it is their fault. However, government officials voted for the law requiring said companies to manufacture said cigarettes and, therefore, they should be held responsible.
I suggest that those government officials who voted for said law, whether or not they had prior knowledge as to the health hazards associated with inhaling Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, (the fire retardant in FSC), be held responsible and sued as individuals in a criminal court: The theory being that, if they had advance knowledge of said hazards, and, in spite of said knowledge, still voted for said law, they are no better than the cigarette companies they sued, i.e., where, cigarette manufacturerâs had prior knowledge of the health hazards associated with smoking, etc., yet still sold cigarettes with no warning: If said officials did not have prior knowledge, (which is scary), and yet still voted for the FSC law, they should be sued on the theory that ignorance is no excuse. In addition, if expert testimony was given to government by those familiar with the health hazards of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, and, said testimony did not include the health effects associated with inhaling Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, they should also be vigorously sought out and given their day in a court of law.
I would also like to point out that, lately, government officials seem to be making a lot of decisions behind closed doors, without the publicâs knowledge: The FSC law is only one example. If we hold said officials responsible for their actions, we can put government back in the hands of the people, i.e., where it was meant to be.

Just how much damage have they done, and what is yet to come ?
You know what, it's probably, just to be certain, we don't harm ourselves, right ?
You wanna know what else ? They've got it covered all the way around. If, you should fall over dead while consuming this super poisoned contraption and it should create a house fire, killing the rest of your family, you will be able to take solace . No one will ever blame it on your habit because, you were, indeed, using fire safe (fsc)cigarettes . Finally, the most ironic part of it all will be when, the fire inspector's report undoubtedly concludes that, you simply just fell asleep, during a house fire.
But seriously, if you don't want to die many, many more times sooner than before, then you should do just as I did and vow to never smoke another FSC (fire standard compliant cigarette) . Alternatively though, I will,(especially now) continue to smoke tobacco in any form until it has been made entirely illegal . Also, if things don't change by that time, I will have considered this nation unfit for habitation by freedom loving individuals such as myself.
These new and much more effecient, liver killing, death sticks had me sick for 6 months ! I had no Idea what was causing it until January, 1, 2010. I almost died ! I already had a liver condition . Thanks for the "heads up" "nanny government".
But wait, theres even more ! Do you feel a lump in your throat ? Is your chest on fire ? Having palpitations, overly accelerated pulse rate, insomnia, anxiety and/or mental depression ? Pulmonary edema , severe weakness, headaches, dizziness, kidney problems ? Are you having any symptoms of central nervous system depression, confusion, hoarseness, an inability to sleep in a horizontal posistion, and much , much more ?
When you get sick and you visit your Dr. he or she may have trouble diagnosing your condition . If so, just ask to be checked for ethylene vinyl acetate (carpet glue)poisoning . Also, (this is important) don't forget to mention that you have been burning and inhaling it at, what are apparently, toxic levels !
I would like to thank nanny government and all of the great many social engineers who are working so **** my behalf . Now , instead of taking up to what could have been decades to kill myself, I can use the new and improved, fsc death stick, and potentialy, do the job in as little as a matter of months.
But seriously, smoker's will now start to drop like flies, and you know what they love to say , "Now you know, as we have already told you, smoking is very dangerous". I have been a smoker for 30 years and have never had any symtoms other than an occasional cough until, the stealthy introduction of the fsc's.
20 million, demonized and bullied US.citizens, may not seem to be that big of a percentage compared to the rest population but, 20 million people can completely blow the (always closed) doors from this crooked government and the rest of it's perverted, twisted , greedy, narcissistic, social engineers ! 20 million voters can create a heck of a large swing vote . If we will all speak together our voice will be, overwhelmingly loud. Let our voice not, go unheard ! Once again, let freedom ring !
Call , write or e-mail your state and federal representaives and don't forget to register and VOTE !
In case you haven't already done so, don't forget to sign and if you wish, leave a comment on the rather large and fast growing petition at,
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/repeal-fire-safe-cigarette-laws
Just in case, you are still a skeptical anti-smoker and don't believe any of this, then I dare you, (with your heart) to just read a few pages of the comments made. A lot of these unwitting victims of this atrocity will undoubtedly now have to suffer for life.
Wouldn't you expect to have been advised If the toxicity of your favorite medications, make-up or food preservatives you have come to trust and depend upon, been increased, substantialy ?

Make the smokers sick
By Chris Brown on Jan 16, 2010 3:54:46 PM
Yes the symptoms sound familiar. Sore throat, dry mouth, respiratory infection, chills, fever, body aches, headaches . Most doctors would say you have the flu or maybe strep throat. My doctor doesn't know what I have and I have had these symptoms every since these fsc cigarettes have been on the market. The tobacco companies have a bad reputation with telling the truth in the past. Why should things change now. Maybe when the American people quit buying their products and start growing and selling their own. The multibilion dollar tobacco industry will understand that we don't need them. Even if it means another product gone to the black market. The American smoker will change and get their untampered cigarettes one way or the other. The tobacco companies would be naive to think that smokers would not know the difference in their product. These things are making people sick and should be banned for health purposes. The public should have been informed prior to their poisoning from this tainted merchandise. Any one care to talk about long term effects. Within 4-6 weeks of these fsc's I have had these symptoms develop and I am normally a healthy, active person but these symptoms seem to be lingering. I plan to grow my own tobacco and sell it, whether legal or not. If I am going to kill myself with cigarettes, I want to do it on my own terms

I hate the new FSC. Cigs burn funny or go just go out. I have just about burned my eyeball several times relighting it while I smoke. They go out for no reason in mid smoke. So this is how I fixed the problem: take your fingernail and run it down the side of the cig. as you turn the cig. This breaks the fire safe band on the cigs paper and they actually burn correctly. I did this for an entire pack and only one cig still self-extinguished. GOOD LUCK!!!!

I call them 'Fire Starter Cigarettes'. Annoyingly I can taste the sodium that is used in them and wonder what other chemicals are being added to my body. Ashes drop everywhere making messes on everything. The 'cherry' tends to fall off, especially when they are relit. I feel like I have to carry an ashtray under the cigarette just to keep from burning things. I have been burned countless times. I have burned my mother's $2000 white sofa, 2 oriental rugs, a nightgown and a pair of Levi's. My daughter's friend has a burn on her chest the size of a fingernail. Her boyfriend has over 10 burns on his coat from the coal dropping off his cigarette while he was driving. I have started taking pictures and noting date and time of damage. When I accumulate a sizable amount of monetary damage I intent to go to court. Hopefully this will change before someone is seriously hurt from a fire or car accident because of inaccurate, inconclusive testing of these dangerous 'safety' cigarettes that are being marketed!!

I wondered what was wrong with my cigarettes. I even started purchasing them by the pack, instead of the carton, because some packs were still "good", while others were yucky! They burn unevenly, go out, and fire has fallen out on me and my clothing. I guess Alabama has jumped on the bandwagon, because I did not notice this until around the holidays. Now every pack I get is like this. My husband travels in the southeast. Does anybody know of any states that have not destroyed my cigarettes? I even wrote to Philip Morris Corp. and received no response (surprise!) I have tried a friend's smokeless cigarette to try to quit. With these "new" cigarettes, the smokeless ones are starting to look tempting. Maybe then I can finally kick the habit.

If you are being made sick by the FSC cigs, you need to stop smoking them now. I am a smoker and have found out that these cigarettes do cause liver and kidney damage. That is why they are making people nauseous and other symptoms. Until they pull them, which I figure is only a matter of time, you can roll your own with a cig roller, filtered cigarette chambers, and the tobacco comes prepackaged. I refuse to smoke these things. I roll my own and have since cleared all of the health problems I was having. I was having horrible nausea, headaches, just felt horrible, and I know it was the cigarettes. WHERE IS THE FDA???? Wake up FDA, stop worrying about McDonalds and the way they cook hamburgers and concentrate on these deadly cigarettes! This is where you attention needs to be drawn. If you have been diagnosed with anything related to these cigarettes, take it to an attorney and get something done right now. The government is except from such lawsuits, but the cig manufacturers aren't. Maybe if they get sued enough, they will fight these laws like they used too. They fought it for years, and need to fight it again. Please don't smoke these cigarettes, they really can kill you.

I am a social smoker and have noticed a difference in the cigarettes also. I began getting headaches and just didn't want to smoke them. I realized very quickly what they were and began trying to figure out a way around them.
I may have too much time on my hands, but I noticed if you take the cigarette and roll it between your fingers several times and loosen the paper up it will smoke more freely. I know this is not a solution, but there's always a way around a problem, even the government. So, try this and let me know if it helps and if it does pass the word on.
1. We pay for our cigarettes by means of working and having money.
2. No free healthcare, make the people get a job and work for their insurance like the rest of us. I was always told by my grandmother who lived through the depression. Having a job is not shameful, no matter what that job may be, but having no job is! If you work you will have money for what you need. There's always a way to provide.

2) EVERYONE WHO IS SUFFERING FROM THE SIDE AFFECTS GO TO THE CLOSEST STATE RUN EMERGENCY ROOM AND GET "FREE" TREATMENT. SAY YOU HAVE NO MONEY AND NO INSURANCE. PUT THE BURDEN OF OUR NEW HEALTH PROBLEMS ON THE STATES. HIT THEM IN THEIR POCKETS.

FSC Cigarettes

Hi All Smokers,
I had read this comment section early this morning and, now have begun what I hope will be a fruitful endeavor. The following is a letter I have sent to all NYS assembly members and the Governor. Please do the same in all states.
RE: So-Called Fire Safe Cigarette (FSC)
Greeting All;
First let me say that this is a clean email in spite of the fact that I am angry. Do not become encumbered by my seemingly poignant criticisms: I afford each of you the benefit of a doubt. However, I am angry. If you are thin skinned, move on to read from the fifth paragraph down.
Let me put a proposal before you. Why donââ¬â¢t we put a mildly strong acid in alcoholic beverages so that drunks canââ¬â¢t drink enough to get drunk. So that their stomach linings become so damaged that they canââ¬â¢t even eat. And here is another good idea. Let us not test the effects of said acid on the human population. Then we donââ¬â¢t have to worry about drunks prowling our roadways and killing innocent people anymore. Do we? I think this is a superb idea; Oh! Wait a minute. You people drink alcoholic beverages donââ¬â¢t you? I read about one or another of you pudding heads doing something illegal practically every day.
But seriously. Let us get a movement going to eliminate drunk drivers. Let us raise the price of alcohol to astronomical proportions. Let us add said acid to said beverage. Let us make drunks stay in a restricted area until they are through drinking and are sober.
This is exactly what you S.O. ----- opps, I almost slipped. Let me start again. This is exactly what the past assembly has done in an effort to eliminate smokers. Currently you have raised, to astronomical heights, the cost of cigarettes. You have confined smokers to restricted areas (mmmm, communism?). You have secretly made into law (mmmm, communism?), the addition of fire retardants to cigarettes which, in fact, increases the risk of fire.
O would like you to present me with the statistics on cigarette related fires before and after the implementation of the FSC. But, I want hard evidence. Not some whacked out fire investigator who could not say for sure what caused a fire and so blamed cigarettes. I want proof. Hard evidence. Provide me with such.
More to the point now. I want you to tell me plainly why it is that all of the sudden since the implementation of the FSC my lungs feel heavy, my heart palpates, I wheeze, I have headaches, I cough to the point of vomiting, my mouth and lungs are dry, the cigarettes taste like ****. So you donââ¬â¢t think I am making this up, I want each of you to read the comment section at the bottom of this link: http://www.stateline.org/live/details/story?contentId=228784 I think you will find its contents interesting. I also think you will begin to develop an idea of just how mad smokers are getting.
I want this FSC law repealed. I expect a response from each and every one of you concerning said repeal, i.e., I want to know how you would vote: You are either for or against said repeal based on the facts now available to you. Perhaps those of you who had voted for such law had not been properly advised as to the health hazards attributable to fire retardants. I will give you the benefit of a doubt. However, I advise you to read the MSDS sheets for said chemical before responding to me: I intend to make your answers public and will assume that you are fully informed. I further urge you to repeal this law that was conceived of and manifested in private: The sooner, the better.
Regards,
P.S.: You have raised the price of cigarettes to unimaginable heights and are now looking for other ways to get money. To get said money, given your past voting records, you are seemingly willing to go so far as to make up asinine and ridiculous reasons to raise the taxes on this or that with no supporting evidence. You cleverly lead bone-headed tree huggers and past hippies with minds blown out from youthful experimentation with drugs by their unintelligent minds. However, I urge you not to underestimate the intelligence of the vast majority of New Yorkers: Those of us who prefer to just live in peace, and, preferring not to get involved in things such as politics. But, you are going to far now; way to far. You just donââ¬â¢t get the idea that you canââ¬â¢t spend money you donââ¬â¢t have. You just donââ¬â¢t get the idea that we live in a democratic society. I propose a new and novel idea for those in politics; spend money as if it were your own; just like the rest of us: If we donââ¬â¢t have money, we go without. I suggest government does the same. Also, keep our constitution in mind: I am particularly concerned with the recent behavior of democrats on the federal level, i.e., health care. I noticed a slight difference in taste at first.I ve been a smoker for about 30 years, and yes I cough now and then from it but when I started HAVING to smoke these doctored up "Safety" cigarettes I cough with almost every puff.Plus It does take longer to smoke with all the re lights and fire falling out either on floor or wherever I m smoking at.I am thinking that WE as smokers should have a choice in whether or not we want more toxins on the outside of our cigarettes or not. Also I agree with another person that feels that this is just another way to make smokers less likely to light up.If you want to put toxins in something to make it taste worse why don t you go with alcohol that will make less people wanna drink thus causing less drunk driving accidents and may save many lives,I m sure ALL of the Good people that has Tragically lost a Loved one to a drunk drivers stupidity will agree that thats one thing we can do without.SO IN CLOSING I SAY....NO FCSs in my cigarettes.

FSC Cigarettes
By Carrie Van Horn on Jan 3, 2010 8:56:36 PM
FSC cigarettes are horrible and extremely dangerous. When I first heard about them on TV I thought they were a pretty cool idea because I'm all for fire prevention. I was wrong.
The "fire safe" cigs are much more a fire hazard. The lit end falls out often and when you re-light they often spark (flame up). I read where one lady burnt her bangs and forehead because of that and thousands have burnt carpets, furniture, and clothes and/or have gotten sick (including myself). The papers aren't actually thicker, it's more paper stuck together with carpet glue. Funny how they thought they had to slow down the burn rate with more chemicals when they tobacco contains chemicals to accelerate the burn. A lot of people have said they almost wrecked their cars when the cherry falls on their lap while driving. This is where it really affects nonsmokers because people will be crashing into them too! There is an online petition to repeal this law http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/repeal-fire-safe-cigarette-laws. Read the signatures, it is really scary.
After decades of smoking factory cigs hubby and I are smoking (vaping) e-cigs now and stuffing our own also. We will never, ever smoke another FSC cig. Wishing all smokers the best in quitting or finding an alternative, or two. Happy New Year!

Identified Hazards
By Dee Roberts on Dec 30, 2009 4:41:34 PM
This is what we are now smoking besides tobacco see below:
1) Cigarette company literature and health officials have identified "light" cigarettes as no less dangerous than regular cigarettes. Such light cigarettes contain equal amounts of carbon monoxide. The affect and harm of cigarette smoke varies depending upon the smoker's habit of taking longer, deeper and more frequent puffs on the cigarette. This is a widely accepted fact. Fire Safe Cigarettes require that a smoker inhale in less than one minute or the cigarette will extinguish itself. The need to keep a FSC cigarette burning increases the number of inhales per cigarette, and thus increases the amount of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide intake into the smoker's lungs. The result is more health-risk damage to the smoker.
2) The Fire Safe Cigarette design has resulted in more frequent ash, which may fall and ignite more fires than regular cigarettes.
3) Having to relight cigarettes increases the potential for more fire related accidents with matches and lighters.
4) The added and higher level chemicals contained in FSC cigarettes has proven to be more toxic than regular cigarettes and cause increased health related problems for smokers. Symptoms/conditions include, but are not limited to: Nausea, Sores in mouth and throat, Dry throat, constant headaches, extreme coughing, tightness in the chest, vomiting, body aches, pain in the abdomen and respiratory conditions including asthma and bronchitis.
a. The Harvard School of Health reported that when comparing NY Cigarettes (FSC) versus Regular Cigarettes, the FSC cigarettes produced 13.9% more Naphthalene and 11.4% more carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes.[1] Naphthalene is commonly found in moth balls, and exposure in high amounts can result in "Symptoms of acute exposure include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise, confusion, anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma."[2] Therefore, it has been proven that FSC cigarettes contain higher levels of chemicals that are harmful to smokers.
b. Phillip Morris USA has reported that the Adhesive ethylene vinyl acetate and polyvinyl acetate are used in the non-tobacco ingredients of cigarettes produced as a Side-seam adhesive. However, Phillip Morris USA fails to distinguish the differences in levels between regular and FSC cigarettes. The amount does not exceed .6 % combined.[3] Since additional layers of paper are used in FSC cigarettes, more adhesive is needed in the form of ethylene vinyl acetate.
Safe smoking habits of responsible adults prevent fatalities from burning cigarettes. It is up to individuals to responsibly extinguish cigarettes. The creation of FSC cigarettes has created numerous hazards which cause more fatalities and problems than the small amount of lives saved from fires with the FSC cigarettes in use. Not only are the FSC cigarettes unsafe to smokers, it presents health problems and increases the damage of cigarettes. Due to inadequate testing by Cigarette Companies and government agencies, the FSC cigarette poses real and identified dangers to the smoking public. Therefore, the FSC laws are detrimental to the public good and must be repealed immediately.

"Fire-Safe Cigarettes"

OK. After reading a few of the comments, it took me only a minute to find out what was causing me to itch all over, be nauseous, have headaches, have more coughing, and have blisters on my thumbs from repeated lighting. Not to mention everytime you re-light a cigarette it tastes worse and worse. But you have to re-light - the alternative is way too expensive! Quitting - NO WAY - it's about the last little pleasure I have and NO ONE is going to take that away from me - I've given up enough.
I HAVE HAD IT! Suddenly, at this time of my life, when I am supposed to be enjoying it, it is worse than ever. Thanks to this administration, the PLEASURE POLICE have changed everything in my life. My husband loses his job after a long and satisfying career and has difficulty trying to find a similar job due to no jobs available and his age; I have to get pneumonia if I want to smoke when we go anywhere but we can no longer afford to go anywhere like an occasional dinner out or a vacation; I have to get on Medicare when it is being ruined by B. HUSSEIN OBAMA; I have to get different medicines because what I'm taking that is tried and true is not covered; I will be forced to die if this health care program goes through and I'm NOT ready to do that yet; I am losing my Constitutional and God-given rights one by one almost on a daily basis; I don't trust my government; our children and grandchildren are being indocrinated and turned into "rats" along with neighbors and friends; PC is way out of hand; and I no longer feel safe!
ENOUGH already - nobody asked me if I wanted any of these things. Isn't it amazing that the most taxes come from us cigarette smokers - and why not - they'll succeed in making us sick to increase our health care needs so that they can pass their stupid health care programs and teach me how to die!
I hope this country will wake up soon and throw them all out of office before we have no country left! Contact your elected officials and find out who really represents you and VOTE THE REST OUT!! There is sooo much more I could say but I'm sure another opportunity will arise soon enough!

I am looking into a class action law suit and I will keep you all posted on how it progresses.
I have a great idea. Let's put a coating on the fattening foods the fat senators and congressmen eat and then let's put some poison in all the alcohol they consume. And let's go ahead and put some sort of safety something in the water in Washington D.C. I think that's fair. Let them have headaches, nausea, disorientation, sores, bad tastes in their mouths and body aches. Let them not be able to catch their breath. I mean after all, overeating is bad for you so maybe they should just quit. Yes that's it, stop overeating Washington or we'll just poison you until you do. The same with alcohol. Stop being alcoholics or we'll poison your bourbon and your scotch until you either die or stop drinking.
Communism is more and more alive in our great country. Land of the free, home of the brave? I don't think so. Not anymore. We aren't free to do much of anything but give these inglorious *****s a bunch of tax money.

I cannot believe we now have new laws in place that directly affect the quality of cigarettes being placed on the market! When did these changes come about? And how was this rammed down our throats without any prior knowledge so it could be challenged!
Smokers have less rights....during this rampant reign of the politically correct and the Obama government-do-all era...than at any time I can ever recall! But let me tell all you folks who don't have a dog in this particular fight: there WILL come a time when YOU TOO will lose some of your freedoms...and it will probably happen to you, just as it did to smokers this time around. We were blind-sided!
These new FSC cigarettes are not fit to smoke, to put it bluntly. By the time you puff them to death, to keep them lit, the taste of the tobacco is horrible!! It also leaves smokers with unnecessary headaches, sore throats, and no telling what other ill effects that we don't even know about!!
If our government leaders spent half as much time taking care of important business in this country right now...and not worrying about something so trivial as safe cigarettes...we would all be much better off!! And they might actually get something worthwhile done in Washington! There's a good reason why the USA is quickly becomming the laughing stock of the world...our leaders, from the top rung down...are a joke!!

By what I've read, smokers (thought of today as sub-humans!) were not asked or told/warned about these changes? Whatever. We are losing "rights" all over the place. I wonder; will something be put into or taken out of alcoholic beverages?
This way those who choose to drink and drive, won't go out and kill themselves, or worse some innocent person!!!
I wish that soon, the "powers that are" will find something new to entertain them, and get off the smoking community. Everyone still has the freedom of choice, and
will quit smoking or doing whatever when we choose to.

I have had this weird cough since this summer, just can't shake it. It doesn't feel like I'm congested, I just will start hacking until I feel like I'm about to gag. It comes and goes.
I figured it had something to do with smoking, of course that's the first thing you think, but it just came on all of a sudden. I have no health insurance right now so I have not been checked out by a doctor for it, although who knows if I would have anyway, since I already know what they would tell me.
I am already ticked off at all the price hikes for the only freakin vice I really have. Now this!!!
We should be able to sue for this. Does anyone know if we can? Sure, we knew there were health risks when we decided to keep smoking. But I, for one, had no idea about this ****. If they want us to quit smoking by doing this, why don't they just quit producing the damn things.
Us smokers need to do something about this! Any ideas out there?

I have been smoking a pack a day for 30 + years and my lungs haven't bothered me other than an occasional chest cold. I noticed a difference the first pack of the FSC I smoked, not knowing I just passed it off as being a bad batch of tobacco, but all the other packs that followed were the same. as symptoms of headaches, uncontrollable shakes in my hands, clots of "****" in my lungs along with fatigue and heavy congestion has been getting worse and then I thought it was the flu but these symptoms are only when I smoke. Today I was talking to my nephew in Missouri and I found out about this wonderful change the government voted in secrecy without telling us the public about what they were doing. I see now it is only about the tax money that lines there pockets making them richer, it is not about the health of the people or is it just the prejudiced against the smokers to make it harder to smoke, I myself have had enough of all the taxes and the bureaucracy.
This act is against not only the smokers but the whole nation! If they are doing this to us what do you think they are doing to the rest of you behind your backs without your permission. THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING MY FELLOW AMERICANS!!!!

These FSC are horrible!!!!

I have been smoking for 46 years and never burned a thing with a cigarette until these FSC came out. I have now burned holes in 3 blouses and about 100 spots on my carpet because when you are drawing on the cig, it gets to the "go out" spot and the hot tip falls off and burns something. So how is this safer? Plus, they are not good for your health. The first 2 weeks, I got sores in my mouth. I still have a sore throat and my chest hurts. I think this is just a ploy to get people to stop smoking. Why doesn't the government realize that some people would rather live a short, happy life than a long miserable one. If everyone quit smoking and lived to be a 110 years old, how is the government going to pay to support all those people in nursing homes because they outlive their wealth??? I don't want to live a long life in a nursing home. I wonder if Obama will pay for my ruined carpet and 3 blouses? I bought an electric machine to try to make cigs like the pre-FSC, but the tobacco falls out of those too. I must be doing it wrong or buying the wrong type of tobacco. Since the government is taxing us to death on cigarettes, they should at least let us have the cigarettes we enjoy. They can put the tax money in a fund to pay for the nursing homes for all those non-smokers that live to be 110 years old in a nursing home. Then that problem would be solved and the smokers could have a shorter, happier life.

Then media brainwashed the public into accepting health hazards from smoking, then on to second hand, etc.. Thats the exact same strategy that was attempted with Global Warming, which has been exposed thanks to the internet as a Fraud.
On Fire Safe Cigarettes the chemical used is ethylene vinyl acetate. In the Manufacturer's Safety Manual it states that this is a deadly and dangerous chemical. Externally it causes skin problems, etc. but if consumed is fatal and relects the symptoms/complications being expressed by smokers. The anti smokers accomplished what they wanted with this legislation, genocide of those who use their Free Choice to continuing smoking.

Cigaretts fire bands is JUNK
By Janette Good on Nov 29, 2009 8:15:49 AM
With the new bands to prevent fire the cigarette is not fit to smoke anymore. The tast is like smoking anything but tobacco. The process has made my mouth parched and crusty feeling of a layer of dry skin. The new process has caused me to have fever blisters and the sorry taste is not worth my time. The things stink with a funny odor. I think there is a chemical in the paper that is worse than the chemicals in the tobacco. The paper is made of something dangerous and I'm tired of these colations, non-profits, and not for profits making laws that hurt people. Cigarette companies and paper makers can lie all they want but this is junk science and somebody made therself a job at my expense. I'll just quit because it is not worth my time to smoke and relight paper. I'll just get me a piece of notebook paper and light up. Smoething stings my mouth on every draw and something is taste weird that is not tobacco. It is probably some plastic from the sparks it makes when relit. I'm not paying tobacco companies when they don't have the guts to stand up for the smoker. Cigaretts are junk and do not even resemble a cigarette in taste. I don't somke for looks and that is all they have going for them.

Fire Safety Cigarettes
By Diane Peck on Nov 29, 2009 3:44:13 AM
The cigarettes might go out after you stop puffing on them for awhile. But the fact is,when you re-light them, they burn half way up and shower you with sparks and ashes. Also since this happens you spend more on cigarettes then usual. We the public have no idea what they have done to the paper which may also be hazardous to our health. I think the cigarette buying should have a choice in what kind we want to buy.....just like we should have the right to smoke where we want. Thank You

we are smoking EVA (carpet glue) in the FSC cigarettes
By Cindy Robinson on Nov 29, 2009 12:03:42 AM
These new FSC cigarettes taste terrible!! Also they make my throat burn, give me nausea, & the worst headaches I have ever had!!
I have been reading about the FSC cigarettes from what I can tell they are made with bands on the paper. These bands have Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, for those of you who don't know what that is... its basically what they use to glue down carpet. So they have added carpet glue to the cigarettes. If you look Ethylene Vinyl Acetate up in the Department of Health and Human Services under household products, it states that EVA is safe under normal conditions. Normal conditions that DO NOT include inhaling it! There is not one listing for EVA to have internal use. EVA is listed for external applications only such as wall insulation, flat wall paints, speed dry nail enamel, mortor, & make up eye pencils just to name a few. The Material Safety Data Sheets also say that EVA can release irritating and/or toxic fumes & vapors if involved in a fire! So when you light your cigarette your burning EVA and inhaling toxic fumes!! MSDA also says that molten EVA may cause thermal burns! Which might explain the burning in my throat. I don't know what we as smokers can do to stop them from selling FSC cigarettes since we didn't get to vote on the issue at all. Perhaps when we all get sick from smoking these FSC cigarettes they will figure out they might be saving lives caused from cigarette fires but they are killing the rest of us one puff at a time! Or is that their plan?

They was giving me bad headaches, and taste like S**t.
If Tennessee wants to protect Tennesseans. Our Legislators should be looking at alcohol. Dam funny, you don't hear about any State Legislation to water down alcohol. If they look closer at the fires,They would see that, had they not been intoxicated they would not have passed out with a lit Cigarette and burned down the house. But i guess we need to protect the alcoholics so they can buy more alcohol and get drunk and climb in their cars and drive down the interstate and kill someone trying to relight one of these Safety Cigarettes.

We need to come together and force them to hear us on the FSC's!
By Shana Stone on Nov 20, 2009 3:02:49 PM
I have been a smoker for 20 + years, and I never had one single health issue, until the FSC's were forced on us. Why weren't we given the choice as to whether we wanted this? The reason they didn't let us decide, is because they knew we would say no! Please...ALL SMOKERS need to band together and force our State Government's to hear us, and to let them know that we will NOT tolerate being forced to smoke these toxic cigarettes, and that we pay the taxes NOT them!!! E-mail your State reps. and state senators and let them know how you feel, and also get on FDA website and submit a comment with them as well. Let them all know that we are sick from these cigarettes. Sign the online petion to repeal fire safe cigarette laws. It's already surpassed it's 10,000 signature mark. The one thing that angers me the most, is that the media is saying nothing to the public about the health issues that many thousands of smokers are having due to the FSC cigarettes! I will not tolerate being ignored since I pay outrageous taxes just to be able to smoke!
PLEASE.....do everything you can to make them hear us! We can't let them keep taking our rights from us!

FSC_Harmful & Unlawful Practices By Our US Government
By Briggett Burnett-Chambers on Nov 16, 2009 7:26:09 PM
While it is never surprising what various government bodies will do that have authority on making choices for all people in the United States, it is sad that we live in a country unlike others that Our Gov't protects, yet the powers of those who make, create and implement regulations unbeknownst to the people in America is SHAMEFULL! I am a woman of 51 yrs. and have seen many ungodly ways and actions of people who regulate the system and implement laws that only bring harm to those of us who live in America! While smoking is no longer popular as it once was and those who no longer smoke look down on those of us who still do, it is PURE EVIL that governs those who would quietly put CARPET GLUE in Cigarettes and say it won't do anymore harm than what is already being done!!! HOW EVIL & VILE the people who think so nonchalantly about this fact. There will be many things that occur and have occurred that regulators such as the FDA and many others will agree to. While they have chosen to practice such evils they will not be fearful in knowing their destination. How such act and actions can be taken, yet it is never announced as it should be, but done very underhand. Is this a part of the SCHEME of the Government, FDA, Big Pharma & AMA to create even more sickness and make people their guinepigs, while they bilk medical insurances to another new all-time high? We have the government considering adding or adding a fat tax for juke food eaters (that's everyone at some time or another), cigarette taxes have increased too many times to count, gas prices are as high as they ever were and we no longer hear about oil shortages either since Obama became PRESIDENT....Certainly, he knows U ALL R HIS ENEMIES...I LOVE HIM FOR THAT Among other things. Oh, don't forget about what you have done to our public schools across the US, especially the poor communities you believe have low to no expectation of their youth and value them even less....What A**H****All of YOU ARE. We receive only bad food in most Caldean ran grocery stores and it's never inspected. Yet, with all of the things our government conspires to destroy it's people but act as though they care about us, they have allowed food to be made, produced and shipped that is not good, manufacturers are allowed to put any and everything in food products that causes disease and destroys the body, yet no one ever calls the manufacturers to stop making these products...that includes Big Pharmaceuticals who spend pennies on the dollar to make killing meds that are astronomical in costs to those who are prescribed medications by there drug pushing, script writing, kick back receiving, physicians...who oftentimes are too thick skinned to care about anything pertaining to life except their own (this excludes dedicated physicians) and the homes, cars, bank accounts, and the 19 holes of golf they will play. Then of ALL Things to resists AFFORDABLE MEDICAL CARE FOR EVERYONE! WOW!!! It is time for the people of AMERICA to BAND AGAINST THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN GIVEN POWER TO REGULATE AND MAKE DECISIONS TO KILL, STEAL & DESTROY OUR FREEDOM TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY. Cigarettes were never band, like liquor was. The Cigarette Manufactures were allowed to keep putting poison in any brand they made and now today are putting more poisons and toxins as some farce notion to make them a fire hazard? Phillip Morris, R.J. Reynolds and others have never cared and to continue this terrible act of hurting people without a cause who have made them filthy, filthy rich are SOUL-LESS....EVERY DIRTY SOUL HAS HIS/HER DAY. There will be even more EVIL that abounds but it will all go back to its creators and participants of knowing practice. With the exception of OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT and very few systems, like Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, I have no respect for this Government. Our Government is not worth the lives of millions or men/women lost or serving on behalf of this SOUL-LESS ENTITY. I PRAY GOD WILL TOUCH EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU AS ONLY HE CAN AND HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SOULS.

I agree with Tami. These cigarettes are awful, not that smoking is pleasant tasting, but they are even worse now. A recent trip to Kentucky we bought FSC cigarettes and didn't know what they were until we were informed. From what I understand the State Legislature has to vote on these cigarettes. Well I live in Alabama and am a cashier at a local convenience store, the distributing company that we buy our Sonomas, GT , etc are going FSC by the end of the year. I guess my question is how can they do this without the Legislature voting on this for your state. I am in the process of trying to get them to change companies. In the mean time we are buying our personal cigarettes without this toxin.( I do plan on quitting)

These awful cigs are killing us more now that this additive is in them
By Tammy Jovi on Nov 12, 2009 9:49:25 AM
I have been a semi smoker for years. I can't take smoking these awful cigs with this additive in them. I recently live in IL and they went to this additive and I can't smoke at all because of the awful aftertaste in your mouth and the side effects from the additive. I have had upper respiratory problems from this and my doctor asked about the additive and even provided me with some information on the additive. It is not healthy as it is but with this in them they are more harmful now. I can't believe the government can do this and knowingly harm other Americans. I realize that smoking has become a thing of the past and that we shouldn't do it but again I thought this was America and we are suppose to vote on these kinds of things before they just do what they wish. It is harmful and wearing me down with respriratory problems and also it is not getting any better with the headaches and such. Please take a stand and let's try to recover from this situation. Again the perscuted smoker is taking the rath for our governments decisions it is about time we all stood upand took our own stand on this issue.

FSC cigarette additive
By Art Northrup Jr on Nov 12, 2009 8:11:02 AM
The additive used in "fire safe cigarettes" is known as an "A-C ® Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer" and you can pull up the Material Safety Data Sheet, commonly referred to as the "MSDS", on the internet. "Google" this:
[PDF] A-C® 400, 400A, 405M, 405S, 405T, 415, 430
Needless to say, "Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymers" are not good for you & are an industrial product never intended for use in cigarette manufacturing. But the state governments figure that since smoking is already bad for you, there's nothing wrong with making it worse.
Look @ the cigarette pack - if it has "FSC" in small block letters somewhere on it, the smokes have the additive. However, at this time rolling papers do not & many smokers have started buying tobacco in cans, papers, filters & rolling machines to roll their own, if all they can get in packs are the FSC marked cigarettes.

I too have been having headaches every morning. I never get headaches at all. So until I checked on the cigarettes and found out that we are now smoking carpet glue, I thought something else was wrong with me. I cough like crazy, and have had two nose bleeds in the last week. I read that some else was getting the nose bleeds too. Not to mention that they taste yucky. You have to hold the lighter to the cigarette to relight it, as it tastes so bad if you inhale the relight. I just bought 4 cartons, but when they are gone, I'm going to try the new electronic ones. They don't have any tobacco or tar so can't be all bad. I checked all the sites out and the one I found you get the most for your money is http://smoke51.com/781.html. Maybe they will at least taste like a cigarette. Then I know I'm not smoking caret glue at least! The good old goverment at work again. They like all our tax money, regulate so we can't smoke anywhere, and now add toxic stuff to our smokes! Are they trying to kill us all off? Then who is going to pay for all the roads, schools and etc. that our taxes pay for???? Sorry for venting, but this smoke tastes like S..t! Deb

FSC
By Derek B on Nov 11, 2009 11:14:29 AM
Several weeks ago, they raised the price of a pack by about 7 or 8 cents here in Ohio. My friend and I were talking about the fact that our cigarettes seemed to be duds b/c they kept going out. Then I noticed shortness of breath and had heart palpitations. Then I was informed of the FSC by another friend and it all made sense - the slight increase in price to cover the additives for FSC, the constant annoying re-lights, and me feeling like I was dying from not being able to catch my breath and heart palpitations/racing heartbeat. I was about to go to the Dr. to find out why I was having all the respiratory and heart problems, but now I know.
This is re-GD-diculous. No warning, no press, nothing. You would think the American Lung Assoc. would have at least warned people about this!
So now I'm probably going to quit smoking because I can't continue with these symptoms and I'm not going to roll my own. And this is exactly what the government/anti-smoking lobby wants. I've read some other posts on this topic and it's true - we are turning into a communist state. It started with the seatbelt law about 15 years ago. Now fast food restaurants are required to post nutritional info because we're not smart enough to figure out that a big mac, fries and Coke aren't good for us, cig companies have to add fire dampening chemicals 'for our safety' because some dumba** falls asleep with a lit cig, huge corporations are now owned by the government and now I've heard talk of a tax on people who eat too much junk food. Where does the regulation of our personal lives/"free" enterprise end? Enough! Get out of my life! If this trend continues, there will be a revolution someday...people can only take so much of the government telling them what they can and can't do. I'm not a Republican per say, but I'm leaning more toward that side every day with **** like this in my face.

Fire Safe Cigarettes
By Patricia Case on Nov 5, 2009 1:27:14 AM
I am a smoker of 20+ years. I have smoked Merit Lights for the last 15 years. I had no side effects, no cough, no problems. I know smoking is not healthy, but I choose to do so, because I enjoy it. Last fall the price of a carton was hitting close to $70.00 and I changed brands. I was unaware the brand I stayed with was stamped FSC. I started having severe migraine headaches, vomiting, and loss of appetite. I doctored myself with Tylenol for about 5 monthes. It was strange the migraines almost always came on the weekends, so I managed not to miss any work. One Monday morning I woke up with the onset of a headache. It progressed to get worse, and I called off work. So, I called my family M.D. and my dentist, and saw each that week. It cast me $267.00 out of pocket for both visits and the blood work. the M.D. gave me Zolof for the headaches. I went for two weeks with the headaches coming and going, and we were talking on break at work about smoking and i checked my brand of cigs, and saw the FSC stamp. That night, I stopped on the way home and changed brands. I switched from a RJ Reynolds brand back to a Phillip Morris brand and I have not experienced a migraine since. Why and how can these so called Fire Safe Cigarettes be allowed to be manufactured, without proper testing on Humans? I am not a danger to anyone but myself, I smoke while I drive and don't kill people, my son was exposed a a child and he doesn't have cancer(and he does not smoke), my cat has been with me for 10 years and she don't complain. Medical studies have no backing of saving money for less cancer patients. Leave our cigarettes alone and solve the real problems.

Stop this facist action now! These cigarettes are terrible and poisoning the consumers!!
By Mark Jagielski on Nov 5, 2009 12:34:43 AM
For centuries now, people have been enjoying the pleasure of smoking tobacco. This fascist anti-smoking regime has been out of control for several years and now has reached a new low with this federal mandate. What you're doing is poisoning consumers of what has long been a profitable and enjoyable American product. What you're doing is wrong.
How many careless drivers get into accidents every year? How many poor diets lead to strokes and heart attacks? How many fires are started by nature and the fact that we think it's perfectly acceptable to fill a dry, fire-prone land area with our combustible homes and toys?
These cigarettes were markedly different when I unknowingly purchased them immediately. I thought I had bought a bad pack/carton of smokes. They tasted terrible and after 2 packs, my throat hurt and I began having what felt like a bad tension headache. I pay WAY TOO MUCH good money to purchase this product to have them taste badly and make me ill. I now am faced with finding alternatives until the next time the nanny laws wreak havoc on my evaporated liberty.
What a terrible Country this is becoming. And so quickly.

I just bought my first FSC and I thought there was something wrong with them, I was going on-line to register a complaint with Doral when I came across this website about the FSC. I had NO idea this is what happened to the cigg. They taste awful and I can't keep them lit to even smoke; when I re-light them they spark up and drop hot sparks out on my clothes and fingers which is not a good idea when driving! So, what safety idea is THIS ?? I realize 'some idiots' have used cigg to spark a fire; but the majority of smokers don't go around trying to light fires with a cigg. Are 'they' going to do something with matches and lighters that light fires? This is beyond stupid to add even more chemicals to the cigg; but in my opinion it's the governments WAY to FORCE people to do what they want them to do, or not to do. First the tobacco was taxed beyond reality; that wasn't enough so they had to add this #$%&& to them. The government is going to tax junk foods next like sodas and chips because they don't want people eating it because it's not good for them which is WHY NOW you see vitamins in some of that junk food. Not that junk food IS good for you, but you can see how this trend is going... This really makes me mad as $%^%&* that they have added this FSC $#$%% to the cigg. Can't even enjoy a freaking cigg. now in the privacy of my own home!!!

I also know that you have to draw on the cigarette more frequenlty to keep it lit, and draw harder making the effects of the cigarette worse than ever, thanks allot for listening to Legislators ie (Politicians) you should have known they don't know Sqwiat look at the shape they have the country in? These have to be one of the worst ideas someone came up with. #1 they taste bad, #2 to keep the cigarette from trying to butt out you have to hit it two or three times in a row..now you have ashes then a ring of un burned paper and then the paper catches again. Then the paper ring burns leaving you with a very long ash and a very long cherry on the end that usually falls off in your lap or on your furniture!!! SAFE!?!?!?! If these things are all I am going to be able to buy then I WILL quit...then what is the state going to be able to tax me on to pay for their roads, ect?????

FSC-FACTS
By WIL VAPE on Oct 16, 2009 10:44:04 PM
âThe Harvard School of Health reported that when comparing NY Cigarettes (FSC) versus Regular Cigarettes, the FSC cigarettes produced 13.9% more Naphthalene and 11.4% more carbon monoxide than regular cigarettes. Naphthalene is commonly found in moth balls, and exposure in high amounts can result in headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, malaise, confusion, anemia, jaundice, convulsions, and coma. Therefore, it has been proven that FSC cigarettes contain higher levels of chemicals that are harmful to smokers.â

FCS Fire Safety Cigarettes

I live in Ohio and it is not mandatory as of yet that we sell FCS cigarettes until next year. 2010. Although our lovely state has choosen to sell them and not inform anyone. Over the weekend, I got married. AS you all know how stressful a wedding can be, I found myself smoking alot more cigarettes then usual. I usually smoke about a pack a a day. The day of my wedding I went to the store to buy my second pack for that day, Everything seemed normal. After smoking about 8-10 cigarettes, I noticed, I had lost my sense of taste, smell and my mouth was overly dry. I didnt know what in the heck was going on. At the end of the night, I had told a few of my friends that I wasnt feeling well and my throat was killing me. A friend of mine said "are you smoking those nasty FSC Cigs. what are u talking about? She then told me that they were in OHIO and to check my pack to see if they said FSC. So I checked and it did. She told me that she had to quit smoking because they caused her so many problems with taste buds, sense of smell and they were making her sick. The next morning I went to the store to try and buy a pack that wasnt FSC. and the clerk guarnteed me that they werent. I got home started smoking them and they tasted the same. I checked the pack for the FSC and sure as ****, they were FSC as well. THIS IS CRAZY!!!!!!! My voice is so Hoarse and my throat is killing me. Ive been to 10 stores in my area trying to find a pack of NON FSC, and have had no luck. GUESS WHAT! Im quiting 2day! You just lost a customer! IM DONE! IM Not letting some dumbass control my senses and tell me im not smart enough to not fall asleep with a lit cigarette so now I have to COMPLY?????? HELL NO! Id like to know whos bright idea this was? And what chemicals are being put in these cigs that we arent being told about. I highly doubt 3 bands of paper are going to make me feel that way. All I have to say is.. I know people.. and Im having these FSC cigs and a regular cig tested to see exactly what the difference is and I will be back here to let everyone know! and I will SUE THE **** OUTTA SOMEONE IF IT IS UNSAFE!

FSC vs. ECIGS
By WIL VAPE on Oct 1, 2009 10:55:29 PM
I rolled my own until they added another $25.00 in tax to a pound of tobacco. This was totally outrageous. It now would cost me almost as much to make my own as it would to buy them but at least I wouldn't be smoking the FSC's ones. I smoked for over 40 years. My son smokes the FSC ones and when he's in my house, I can't hardly stand the smell of them. I switched to the e-cig. At least they haven't started taxing the hell out of them yet. The ironic thing is, the FDA wants to ban them because they found a very small amount of a harmful chemical in one out of 19 samples that they tested. What about all of the **** that's in cigarettes ! Especially the deadly chemical in the FSC cigarettes ! They don't give a damn about them because of all the tax money.
After they tested the e-cig, they come out with their propaganda scare tactics and said that there was chemicals in them that are in anti-freeze. First of all, it was a very very small amount in one cartridge that came from China, it was not the norm. Secondly, they compared them to NRT's,(stop smoking aids),like the gum and the nicotine inhaler. Now if they would have compared them to FSC's, the e-cig would have come out smelling like a rose.
Now that the FDA has some say in what's in cigarettes, if they don't at least do something about the FSC's, the people should file a class action lawsuit against them!
They seem to be more worried about banning flavored cigarettes then doing their job, which is to look out for the health of the american people!

Understanding that people are very serious about their rights(and should be!), and that smokers rights are being absolutely trampled throughout the nation, I have attempted to develop another approach to help save the lives of smokers and innocent victims from fires caused by cigarettes. I am an 11 year military veteran as well as a 23 year fire service veteran. I am also a smoker. Please review the program website and send comments to the address on the website. I don't encourage smoking, and I don't tell people how to live their lives. As far as the conspiracy theories related to the FSC cigarettes I have read about, I could care less, I just want fewer fires and fire fatalities. I simply want people to be more safe, thereby making others around them more safe. Take a look and comment, the emails go to me and I can review them and then make enhancements and modifications to the program.

No one talks like you; you are obviously a mole to extract information. That said, though, I'm willing to go to jail for buying non FSC cigarettes and tell even a cop how to do it. It's easy, just Google "buy cheap cigarettes online."
I'd personally buy from outside the country, just to be safe. You as a consumer will have to make your own choice who you will buy from, so also Google the name of the company to see if there are any complaints. If there are complaints, I would choose another place. I really doubt cigarettes from outside the country will be FSC (well, we all know Canada is in on this game). It might take a while to get your lovely non FSC cigs in the mail, but once you get your smokes, do enjoy them.
I'm also pretty sure these cigarette sales are going through USPS, meaning the government mail. Yeah, yeah, I know, they claim they are not the government, but they are. What that means is that cig co's are using USPS because it takes a court order, the way they mail them, to know what's being mailed.
So, buy your cigarettes online but be smart about it. I know I read an article about here in WI where they got info from either credit card companies or cigarette mailing companies like UPS for a list of names. then they mailed that list to its citizens demanding money for taxes. turns out the state is worst kind of business there is, as far as crooks wanting their money. Think about it like this: suppose the state wants its money for taxes on cigarettes ... well, they are going to tax any purchase of cigarettes in their state. But for the state to ask for money that wasn't a purchase in its state or manufactured in its state or anything like that, is only interested in money. So, there you have it. If you buy online, you did not purchase in that state, nor was it manufactured in that state, but yet that state will come after you for its money. I personally refuse to live under fear that a state can lock me up or fine me for nothing I've done to that state. Their argument will be that they don't want FSC cigarettes here; yet, my argument is that I won't smoke something that you want to kill me with.

FSC cigarettes equal special interests
By Lilli Putian on Sep 11, 2009 3:11:42 PM
FSC cigarettes have âspecial interestâ written all over it.
First, make the cigarettes more deadly, claiming itâs only thicker paper and a tad more glue (hint, look up whatâs in that glue.)
Then raise the taxes; make them unaffordable.
Then ignore complaints.
The result: all of this will raise more money for the coffers, for special interests. The other added bonus, you ask? Well first, after a while, everyone will start saying, oh, smoking is bad for them anyways, and they should just stop smoking; who cares if they are complaining now about dying. Anyways, they are all lying about getting sick from FSC cigarettes. No one is going to listen to themâthose smokers!
OK, so now this is where the drug companies, like Pfizer, come into play. Now that everyone is complaining about getting sick from smoking, smokers will naturally turn to drugs to stop smoking. YES, more money for drug companies. Now we got smokers addicted to drugs. WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The end. Oh, yeah, the drug companies and legislators lived happily ever after off of either the death of smokers or sales of drugs. (THATâS MY STORY AND IâM STICKING TO IT!)
Submitted on the anniversary of 9/11, as an example of how I'm consumed with having lost yet another freedom.

I have a cough that won't go away and my lungs began to hurt! Not to mention, the taste is awful! I have been burned by them as well as have holes in my truck from these cigarettes! We all know that its not just paper in them... paper burns like crazy when lit. I was told this morning about something but, I'm not sure its true or not? I was told about a possible recall on the FSC's because it's making people really sick. Can you verify that information? I have smoked nothing but Marlboro for the last 10 years and I'm considering changing to another brand that doesn't have the FSC's yet.

Fire Safe Cigarettes
By Mark Weitkum on Sep 10, 2009 7:24:19 PM
Whatever happened to the freedoms our forefathers paid for with their lives? In the United States of America, if you're a smoker, you have none. No voice in the legislation. None. You will do as THEY say, or else. First, it was the tax increases. Now, they can add chemicals at will - chemicals we as a general population know nothing about, with the exception of the fact that it's making us - and everyone else we know who smokes - very sick. And the "anti-smoking Nazis" are having a field day with it all.
This seems an eerie reminder of a time when people were massacred because of their ethnic origin or race. Now it's all done in the name of health???? My God, what has happened to our nation?

I don't like them either. I have to constantly light them & have almost burned my mouth on several different occassions.
The cigarettes don't hold an ash like they used to either & the fire end (cherry) falls off a lot easier too. I have holes in my car seats also from this. Plus I think it has changed the taste of my cigarettes also. I wish the govt. would stay outta MY business when it comes to smoking. They're making it hard enuff to light up in certain places as it is & now this....what a croc of *^#%!!!
As far as I can see or tell....they are talking outta both sides of their faces in Washington. Taking a LEGAL vice sich as smoking and taking MY tax money for it, but at the same time, making US smokers pay out the pocketbook with fines and paying a higher tax for our habits anyway. So since I PAY into health programs for my smoking habits, and since I don't have any health insurance to speak of...when I POSSIBLY get cancer from my smoking, I want them to use MY money to help me out at the Dr.'s office then!

These fire safe cigarettes are more of a fire hazard, the paper burns uneven and I have had the cherry fall out in my seat while driving and while sitting in a chair at home. Lets get the facts straight you make smoking harder for responsible people and yu should have been doing this for the hand roll cigarette's which have a looser packing. The FSC's taste like ****. I have to take full drags to keep the thing lit. I think the few person's that fell asleep while smoking were more than likely drunk, so why not ban liquor instead of messing with my habit.

I think a class action should be taken against whoever is in charge of the change without the proper testing and studies. I did not have a clue about this when I bought my carton a couple of weeks ago. I thought I bought an old carton or the cigarettes somehow became wet and then dried. I starting feeling like my chest was heavy and full all the time, my chest hurt, my shoulder hurt and I had heartburn for the whole ten days. When I found out about this change it all made sense. I was inhaling so hard all the time that's why my chest was hurting. I have been smoking Marlboro Lights 100's, no other brand, for 25 years and never had this problem, talked to several of my friends and they were experiencing the same. They had no clue either!!!!!!!!!!! You think someone could of gave us a heads up or did studies to find that this cause the pain and suffering. I have now switch to Dorel Lights 100's because they don't have this yet, and all my symptons went away. I do not enjoy them as much, so now I am looking to quit but I need someone like Marlboro to pay for the medicine because it is so expensive!!!!!!

I was in Oklahoma for a few days this summer, and couldn't wait to get back home where they sold normal cigarettes! And now I can't get a normal cigarette in Missouri either. They DO NOT taste the same. Rather than relaxing with a cigarette, you have to puff constantly to keep them lit. I have noticed trouble with taking a deep breath, which I never noticed before, and I believe these 'new' cigarettes are to blame. I hate them!!! First they don't allow us to smoke in many public places...which is fine. But then they tax our cigarettes, and raise our insurance premiums, so we can barely afford them. And now, they are messing with the taste and quality of them. What's next!? This is rediculous! I would bet there are a few smokers out there that would really enjoy setting something on fire right now, in spite of it all! What can we do!?

FPC Cigarettes.
By Kelly Dye on Jul 31, 2009 8:23:45 AM
I want to first state that I have bronchial pneumonia and my doctor believes that is was brought on by the FPCs. On my job site alone there have been at least 7 recent cases of people getting pneumonia. These cigarettes are making people sick.
Also I have found a few places here in my local area where I can still find non-FPC cigarettes and I did a test and for one the FPC does not always go out. Secondly hold them side by side and see the difference in color of smoke, smell and taste.
Someone needs to step up and let our governments know that smoking is not illegal and quit messing with our products. We pay taxes on them, if we burn our houses down that is our fault. Also if you are a smoker your homeowner's insurance is higher for this reason anyway.

FSC Cigarettes
By Christina Wyman on Jul 18, 2009 12:18:58 PM
I was unaware of these recent changes with the FSC cigarettes, Until I started having the problem with them going out all the time. Most of the people in my family smoke and we all smoke the same brand. We all started having this problem. Upon complaining to a co-worker I was informed of this legislation. I can't believe this I thought this was a country of freedom. Everyday we loose a little bit more. We are no longer a great country to live in we are now dictated to. I was smoking marlboro from the time I started smoking until about 5 or 6 years ago when the government decided to stepped in and make them to expensive to purchase. So of course because of them I had to change to a less expensive cigarette. Then you add more tax to the cigarettes preventing most people from being able to purchase them in the first place. We are not stupid americans we know the health risks and we as adults are capable of making our own decisions we don't need the **** from the government telling us what to do ( taking away our rights again). Now you have imposed this new legislation of Fire Safe cigarettes on us with no regard to us at all. I have to continously smoke my cigarette to prevent it from going out and having to relight the thing then it tastes stale like its been sitting there for a week. I have had a seriously bad cough that I really didn't associate with this until I read the other comments. When are you going to realize that we are adult americans we get up every morning go to jobs we hate to pay most of our check out to the taxes that you have imposed on us, then go pay even more taxes to buy anything. Not to mention the added cost that we are now going to have by purchaseing even more lighters to light our Fire Safe Cigarettes and again make sure to add that sales tax for the lighter. Give me a break any law suites I am willing to participate myself not because I want the money but because I believe we as americans have the right to at least be involved is the decision that effects our daily routines. That is what freedom of this country is all about. I would also like to mention that I live in Ohio were the legislation hasn't even passed yet and I am stuck with the same cigarettes that is selling in the approved states. I AM NOT A HAPPY AMERICAN...

i swear that if they put any more laws into effect, i won't be able to even try to pretend to know them all. are we not adults that we should be able to decide for ourselves if we want to smoke, hook a seat belt, put on a helmet, fly out of the country? the gov. tells us what we will do with our money before we ever get it, how much tax we will spend to purchase things we need & want after they take their cut, now they tell us not only when-where-but HOW we can smoke a cigarette. guess we don't have a mind or any will anymore. just act like cattle in a stockyard waiting to go through the chute. good luck america

I have wondered the same thing about stomach/bowel problems resulting from the added chemical(s). These cigs. taste awful and seem to make me feel ill in a way I hadn't previously. I agree, it is time someone seriously look into this. (I'll be looking around to see if anyone is currently trying to do so.)
I recently found non-FSC cigs. on-line (see Carolina Cartons.) They won't be available for much longer.

Chemicals in cig's.
By Michael Spooner on Jul 11, 2009 1:21:49 AM
I've smoked cig's since a very young age. I know all the health risks, i'm well aware of it all. In all honesty, i've been in fantastic health for many many years UNTIL they put these new cig's on the market here in NY that go out on they're own. Now they say that it's only rings of paper added, but there's no way that those rings of paper changed the taste of them so horribly that i've actually considered changing from my normal brand. FYI, I've smoked Marb lights since 1986 and I KNOW how they're supposed to taste. I fortunatly have been in the position to get my cigs from various road trips to virginia, north carolina, and recently florida and have as recently as this past week compared florida cigs to my ny cigs. Now, when I smoke the cigs from florida, they taste better, and I don't have this rattle in my chest, I don't wake up choking and gagging, I'm fine as could be. I smoke the ny cigs with the fire safe ****, and I feel as though i'm suffering an allergy attack that I can't even describe! So, I've recently loaded up on cigs from Florida, and have decided to quit smoking. I've seen my doctor with my questions, and have decided to research this topic. If for some reason somebody files a lawsuit or at the very least an investigation, please notify me, and i'll sign up too!.. Something is definately wrong with these cig's and they should not be sold to the public!

We got these cigs in Wisconsin about a month ago and both my husband and I are in the bathroom all the time. I have heartburn and am just burt out feeling. I got to thinking about it last night and realized it started about the same time we started smoking these new cigs. I called my father who also smokes and sure enough he is having the same symtoms minus the heartburn. What is in this that makes us have 5-6 bowel movments a day??? We even changed to a generic because our old well know brand tasted like **** after they started this. These are made by the same people and only seem to really got out when you get down to the last 4 puffs. What are they poisening me with to make me feel like this? I'm definately in if someone starts a lawsuit.

FSC cigarettes
By Brad Bunger on Jun 24, 2009 5:51:27 PM
I unfortunately also am a smoker that needs to quit... moving on, I have read up on these new cigarettes (fsc) and I know without a doubt they are much more toxic then the non-fsc cigarettes. If I smoke fsc for more then a day or 2 I begin to get sick, basically my allergies go haywire then my stomach starts to hurt and I also can not sleep because of the greatly increased toxins I inhaled throughout the day. I have read that the FDA has not ever even tested these cigarettes before being forced onto us by our governments??? How can this be true? New York was the first to push for the newer cigarettes and probably are the most expensive place to buy them at $10.00 per pack of Newports!!! Harvard university just released results of the fsc cigarettes and reported a greater amount of toxins were found from the fsc then the older style.
I truly believe it's time one of our bigger Law firms gets a hold of this and files a lawsuit against all of the states that passed new laws that require them to be sold, first and foremost New York, The amount of the law suits should cripple these states that seem to devalue people who are addicted to smoking to the point that they force them on us without even testing them first, that level of incompetence and carelessness could cost millions of people valuable years taken off their lives, how much is the value of life? incomprehensible to me what they have done here. If we can recall the Romans ate and drank out of lead items... yet here we are 1000 years later and doing the same thing, but they had the ability to test fsc, but they refused to. The sum of the lawsuit should be equal to the amount of new taxes they just added to the cigarettes... which if you do the math would be a massive sum. If a lawyer reads this and needs someone to test and observe the reaction to the new cigarettes I can be reached at bradbunger@gmail.com... I would be more then willing to testify about their effects in court.
This has to stop! always remember you may feel small as a single person, but it is the little people that make this country and every other country in the world go around. Not the arrogant politicians!

Added Note

Below is a snip it from something I just read after posting my note. I will also add the link to where I found this.. Enjoy.
THE COALITION FOR FIRE SAFE CIGARETTES V. PHILLIP MORRIS
Cigarettes are a leading cause of residential fire deaths in the United States, and fire-safe cigarettes are a âproven, practical and effective wayâ to significantly reduce cigarette fires and related deaths, according to the National Fire Protection Association (http: //www. nfpa. org/). The tobacco industry has long opposed requirements for fire-safe cigarette standards. Initially, the industry contended that it was not technically or commercially feasible to produce fire-safe cigarettes. It has also argued that:
1. fire-safe cigarettes are more toxic than regular cigarettes,
2. consumers will not like the cigarettes, and
3. the cigarettes will not reduce cigarette fires and associated deaths and costs if people are lulled into a false sense of security and handle the cigarettes carelessly.
NFPA has organized a broad-based coalition of interested parties to lead the drive to get (1) tobacco manufacturers to produce and sell only cigarettes that adhere to an established cigarette fire-safety performance standard and (2) ensure that the standards are required in every state (www. firesafecigarettes. org). The coalition consists of fire service members, consumer and disability rights advocates, medical and health practitioners, among others.
In 2006, NFPA wrote Phillip Morris, encouraging the company to âtake a leadership position to enhance public safety by announcing that the company will produce and sell only fire-safe cigarettes in the United States. â The company responded that Phillip Morris (PM USA):
supports enactment of a uniform, national standard for [RIP cigarettes] that would preempt all state and local [RIP] regulations, requirements or prohibitions in the field of cigarette ignition propensity - thereby resulting in one standard applicable to all cigarettes sold in the United States, regardless of the size or location of the manufacturer. Federal legislation would also eliminate the possibility of a patchwork of inconsistent and conflicting state regulations that would be an undue burden on interstate commerce, and would lessen the opportunity for adult smokers to obtain non-compliant cigarettes.
Poster's Note: In the last paragraph it clearly states that WE, The consuming public, and end users of this product, have had our CHOICE to use this product taken away by our Federal Government. I am certain, that if given the 'Choice', many smokers would walk, no, RUN away from FCS (RIP) cigarettes.
Any such federal [RIP] standard should not increase the well-established health risks of smoking, bearing in mind that all cigarettes cause diseases in smokers, whether they are reduced ignition propensity cigarettes or not. It also should not affect the commercial acceptability of the cigarette to adult smokers.

Notes:
By Fred Snyder on May 27, 2009 1:24:06 AM
After reading some of the notes posted here, had to add mine. First, I have been a smoker for many years, and like the lady before me, have heard all the Anti-Smoking propaganda. There is no denial that smoking is bad for us.
Starting the 'added' ingredients to keep us addicted to the pleasure (or curse) of smoking, to now further add more (IN MY MIND) harmful stuff to cause the cigarettes to 'extinguish' themselves. Observation: Anything that causes the extinguishing of of something burning, also causes the reduction of oxygen to the source? Truly, this can't be good for us humans that require oxygen to live. In this area, I feel that in time, we will unfortunately learn of the "added" health risks we already now face.
Next Item: Revenue, It seems awfully coincidental that states that have "required" these cigarettes to be sold in their states, now have attached a higher sales tax to same. In MY state of Arizona, cigarettes now cost a whopping sixty dollars a carton. In NY the average is just over seventy. Kentucky Thirty nine dollars whereas just over a year ago the could be bought got Twenty four to Twenty nine dollars a carton. Of course, there really isn't any coincidence to this. Consider this, The "Federal Government" has taken hold, (and this is to correct the earlier notations of using States) and has 'authorized' a mass drug related addiction to what we already have to this product, then raised the sales tax "KNOWING" we wouldn't be able to walk away from them easily. Conspiracy? hmmmmm

I hadn't heard nor read a thing about the FSC's!!!
I am disabled and it is NOT due to anything smoking related...but I have to spend alot of time doing things while sitting in my chair... I will light up a cigarette... take a couple of puffs and sit it in the ashtray so that I am not trying to hold it while I am typing... sewing... paying bills or whatever... I noticed that everytime I would pick my cigarette up again it would be out!! I was getting so angry and frustrated thinking that I really got a bad carton of cigarettes or something!! The next pack I would "pack" them extra hard and it didn't help... So I would huff and I would puff on my cigarettes until I was almost dizzy sick so that they would not go out on me!
I then started having a horrible cough! I had an unfamiliar rattle in my chest! Now keep in mind that I have been smoking for many years and have never had this rattle without having a cold... I will sit here and cough and cough and my husband will come out of his office and check on me cause he said it sounds like I am gonna die off!
Now I KNOW the typical dangers of smoking so I don't need all you anti-smokers to start lecturing me on it.. I am a big girl and I have heard it all!!! But this isn't right!! Why weren't we informed? Why did they not tell us what " additives" they will be putting in our cigarettes to protect us from dropping our cigarette on the floor and starting our house on fire... GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Hey.... Go to McDonalds and put an additive in their hamburgers to make the consumers sick to help stop obesity... BUT DON'T TELL THEM THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO TO "PROTECT" THEM!!! You are doing this to us because of the FIRE hazzards and fire insurance claims... yadda yadda... Well how about the health insurance claims due to all of the obesity related health problems! Lets get those health insurance claims down by poisoning the food everyone eats huh!?!?
This is just WRONG!!!

I think there is more in these "fire safety" cigarettes than just the extra paper. The first time I smoked them I started itching from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet. I scratched my legs raw trying to get rid of the itch. I have also noticed a strange smell on my fingers when I finish the cigarette. It doesn't smell like tobacco either. It smells like some kind of chemical. I know cigarettes are harmful to your health, but I think that the government is trying to kill off all the tobacco users quickly. Thats too bad. Where will they get all the extra tax money from?? I think they are working on that too though with trying to high tax the soda manufacturers. Gosh, if they could only try harder to work on murderers, rapists and people who hurt other people. I only hurt myself and I think that is my choice. People who smoke are not second class citizens. We have rights too. I would like to see just what goes into all this "fire safety" ****.

Not only did the price of a carton of cigarattes skyrocket this week, but the first carton I purchased for that ridiculous amount just happened to be FSC compliant. Not only am I sick over the price, the quality of my "premium" brand that I have always been faithful to is horrible. They taste terrible and the fire doesn't just go out quickly but also falls off easily. I'm not sure how that can be deemed safe. Also, about half-way through the first pack, one of the cigarettes actually flared like a 4th of July sparkler when I first lit it, including the crackle and snap! As with some of the other comments, I was completely unaware of the FSC requirement and only stumbled upon this site by doing an Internet search to see what exactly the FSC meant. My state is not listed as one of the participating states, which leads me to believe they have gone behind the consumer's back to force these upon us. Yes, I could quit, yes, I know I should, but I don't need government making that decision for me. This is just wrong.

Without knowing about FSC listed on the barcode of the brand of cigarettes I smoke, I noticed a huge change in my smoking. I constantly now have a throat full of congestion I have to cough up all day long. This has been going on for quite some time now. My cigarettes taste terrible and for a smoker keeping the same brand for years, you can tell a change. For all you Cigarette companies that let this happen and did not inform the public, shame on you.In Texas, we pay a hefty price for them now. My friends tell me they immediately got sore thoats when smoking the NEW FSC cigarettes. Sure, you are always under scutiny from the world on all the deaths that come from house fires and cancer related deaths. Nothing is worth a life...and that is so unfortunate.
But why not tell us smokers, who support you, because of this addiction worse than heroin to quit they say, what you plan on doing with our smokes??? OK, our state is endorsing and following the guidlines now, what studies have been done with actual smokers on the new FSC smokes?
How about advertising that? How about doing a commercial on the TV on the new and improved cigarette? Then have all the disclamer's like a new drug on the market does, so we can decide whether or not we want to keep smoking? Is it worth all the new conjestion when I am recovering from pneumonia?

Maybe the symptoms will let consumers know that the FSC can leads to worser health problems. I believe people will get sick and there will be a Class Action Lawsuit. "Well Let Me Know". I am tried of the goverment telling us what to do. How dare you force your substandard "pet" project on us! And in such a sneaky, communistic way. The FSC laws were passed under the radar. How many smokers even knew about the FSC bills under consideration before they went into effect? I am certain virtually none. To deliberately know something is much more harmful and made that way from a hair brained law, and keeping it as a law after all the evidence, is no better than murder. Once the lawmakers know the truth, doing nothing will leave blood on their hands. I don't think anyone wants that. Saving the lives of 700 people a year is an admirable notion, but not at the expense of millions of other lives. There is no evidence that the FSC has been tested for health safety. There is no mention of health safety within the bill at all, that only the cigarette companies must adhere to a performance standard to prevent "full burn" of the cigarette. We are not talking about a non-consumable product here, where fire safety is wise. Cigarettes are inhaled into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, so there must be utmost concern and regulation from government agencies to protect the health of the populous. The law should be repealed. It should not be altered, or wait for additional tests as the negative and harmful effects have already been demonstrated. What can we do? Email, call, write your governor, state legislator in your district, contact the local newspaper. Awareness is key.

Addiction vs the Government
By glenda bell on Jan 23, 2009 10:41:55 AM
Well, I am a smoker, have been for many years. I quit for 2 years and regret the day I ever started back. Yet, I don't appreciate the government making choices for me. My main gripe is "informed decision". We were not notified via the media, letters or any legal notification of the changes taking place with the cigarettes.
I have suffered sore throat, blisters in throat and mouth for over 2 months. No known cause, until now. Cultures ran for strep ect, came back negative. I have recently learned that I have a very extreme allergy to the chemicals now being placed in cigarettes. We tried an experiment, to see if the drs were correct. I didn't smoke for several days through this experiment. On the days I didn't smoke, my throat cleared up. One (ONE) puff off of my regualar brand of cigarettes and I can't swallow.
When is the government going to stop experimenting on us? They have already taken away our right to choice with all of the new laws passed in congress. Might I add, without the vote of the people.
Yes, I am going to quit. The problem is that the chemicals now in cigarettes have increased my dependency on them and quiting is even harder than before. I think they should have to pay for our rehabilitation, since they allowed the addictive chemicals to be added to cigarettes in the first place. But, do you think that is going to happen? No!!
Too bad the cigar smoking higher ups, don't have the best interest of the people in mind.

I am usually content to let our law-makers do their jobs without adding my 2 cents worth, but I feel absolutely compelled to comment on this new law. I am a smoker, I have every intention of continuing to smoke and it is LEGAL for me to smoke. The Government apparently has decided that another of our rights is up for grabs and can be perverted to satisfy the hoity- toities that need to have a coke, a smile and a really good smoke, which would not include the lung-destroying chemical that the retardant adds to an already bad habit. It is MY CHOICE to smoke and I will roll cigarettes in toilet paper before I use the **** that has been introduced to the tobacco in my state. Let's see how that burns. We are taxed to the point of theft for tobacco! We are banned from restaurants and public places with our cigarettes, including the ones outfitted for smokers. Every coffee cafe has lost the majority of it's business because of this. The rights of non-smokers IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE one iota more important than mine. Let them take a powder from the restaurants so we are not aggravated with this petty, ridiculous legislation on personal choice. My first exposure to the FSC situation happened at work with other people complaining. I noticed other peoples smokes having a bad smell to them and asked what the hell they were smoking? It was MY BRAND with the FSC over the bar code.
Well my supply of good cigarettes ran out this week and I had to buy some Friday. This is Monday and I have called in sick.
After reading all of the comments and doing research on the computer I now know why. I'm upset that the tobacco companies have not made an effort to let us know about this in advance. I am on the mailing list of Philip Morris and the only thing I have gotten from them was about an congress proposed "new" tax of $6.10 a carton.
Well I might look like a hobo but I am going to start rolling my own again. I tried it last year just because of the cost and was pleased with the flavor and HUGE COST SAVINGS. It was not as convenient as my regular cigarettes but I can smoke for less than $1.50 a day.
Texas my home realizes about 1.5 BILLION dollars a year in cigarette taxes, however roll you own tobacco and papers are not taxed as cigarettes!
I also wonder how much of a "black market" will develop because of this?

Citizens Against Fire-Safe Cigarettes
By Paul Duke on Jan 17, 2009 8:10:11 PM
I am a smoker and live in Kentucky where Fire-Safe Cigarettes went into effect several months ago. My family and I are all heavy smokers. Without any knowledge or warning we realized one day that our cigarettes kept going out while we were smoking them, followed by constant falling embers that burned our hands. Over the course of the next few weeks we began experiencing symptoms that include; sore throat, nausea, headaches, panic attacks, tightness in our chests, excessive coughing, metallic taste in mouth.
After a trip to the local Emergency Room, I was diagnosed with Thrush and given a round of antibiotics. I completed the antibiotic regimen and still these symptoms prevailed. It was at this point we found out that FSC's had replaced our usual cigarettes. In an attempt to save ourselves from these consequences we started smoking non FSC's and all of our symptoms miraculously subsided. I live on the border to TN and it is just as close to drive there, as it is to the nearest town in Ky. Because I am able to do this, I know for a fact that it is the FSC's that indeed brought on my symptoms.
Here is a link to a petition with 1,360 names thus far and growing of smokers who say that these FSC's are making them sick.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/repeal-fire-safe-cigarette-laws
The facts are that Harvard themselves said that more testing was needed on the effects these products will have on those who smoke them. In an attempt to keep from getting the implementation tied up in Congress, they have set out across the states to set a national standard a lot quicker. They do not seem to care that smokers are getting sick from these legislations.
Here is a link to a blog Citizens Against Fire Safe Cigarettes http://cafsc.blogspot.com/ with some more information on the matter.
When these symptoms hit smokers they will need to know they are not alone. If you are a smoker living in a "fire-safe" state, and experiencing any new side effects, I encourage you to sign the petition. Aside from writing your state representatives, this petition is currently the strongest source I am aware of to make our voice heard.

FLAME RETARDENT CIGARETTES IN NEW JERSEY
By Cindy Getto on Jan 14, 2009 7:12:18 PM
I cannot believe what I am reading about the chemical they are putting in our cigarettes and what this chemical has been doing to people's health. My daughter started having problems with her throat and i have been having problems myself only I thought it was because of a water problem in my basement. I was wrong, these cigarettes are terrible tasting and my daughter's throat problem is definitly from the chemical they put in our cigarettes.. This is totally against everything they tell us they want us to not do...Now they are poisoning us with this chemical yet we can't even buy cough medicine without asking the clerk at the store to give us the medicine item to purchase only after presenting our license to be scanned. They say they are protecting young people from taking drugs but I think they need to stay out of our lives and let us be. Since when does our goverment officials who we put in office have the right to take away our liberties and rights? This is a total joke and we need to start speaking up because before long this country is gonna look like cuba or south korea. Just watch and see.

I to live in the state of Texas and would like to know what they are putting in our cigarettes this is just another infringment on our basic civil rights . These laws are made up by people who probably don't smoke themselves and will do anything to get people to quit we already have lost the right to smoke in bars and in our cars in some states if you have children in your car we also can't smoke in alot of public places or parks anymore due to these new laws and if you do they tax you for through fines and tickets this is just another way to make more money off the people these are reasons why no one has faith in our goverment or the decisions they make they have not been in the best intrest of the people in sometime .

disregard for a smokers rights
By joseph klein jr. on Jan 8, 2009 11:02:18 PM
First of all, I commend the various groups such as the NFPA for trying to reduce the instances of death and injury from careless smoking.
But, the reality is that you have forced an unsafe and under-tested product on to american smokers.Too many smokers across America were not properly informed that their cigarettes were being changed and that they may experience acute symptoms caused by the new FSC cigarettes.I reiterate that I am not talking about chronic symptoms which can happen over time but acute symptoms such as migraines, nose bleeds, sore throat, tightness in the chest, palpitations, and other symptoms which have been described at various sites such as answerbag.com.There is an on-line petition at petitionsite.com which is gaining momentum and will eventually be sent to the governor of Pennsylvania.I believe that the only thing holding back a major backlash from smokers is that it was very conveniently under reported to smokers that their cigarettes were being changed. You can't poison your fellow citizen's just because you don't like one of their habits.I,for one, will be joining the eventual class-action lawsuit.

fire safe cigs

This is the most redicules thing i have ever heard of. In Texas we pay exise tax and sales tax and an extra $1.00 is extrapulated for from us for each pack we buy. We have been and are paying for the right to smoke and enjoy the cigarette of our choice. The one with the right taste and flavor we prefer. The fsc cigarette isn't it. It is nasty, harsh and causes me to be congested and weasy. It also leaves a very offensive smell in the room. The people pushing for these type of smoking laws don't even smoke. Whats next, fire safe birthday candles that go out before you can blow them out. How about a fire safe camp fire that goes out before you can cook a hotdog on a stick. Lets have a fire safe propane grill and a fire safe propane lantern so we can't cook the fish we didnt catch because we couldnt see the fish we caught. How about a nice romantic evening in front of our fire safe fire place and lets keep warm by huddling close to our fire safe wood burning stove. I'm sure there are statistics of death and injuries as well as property damage from any of these activities but they aren't mentioned. It's not about the smoking related fire deaths folks its about nonsmokers and anyone else who wants to take away your rights to do as you choose. Wonder why you didn't know about this new law and these nasty tasting cigarettes until you had one in your hand. Your legislators knew they were sneaking one past you. They knew this would go down your neck crooked. They are cowards and can't look you in the face and tell you they no longer care about you or your rights. If you look closely you will notice there is no extra $1.00 fee being charged for cigars and there is no new law requiring fire safe cigars. Wonder why? Cigars are what your legislators smoke. I wonder what they will steal from us next. You can bet they are already working on it.

I also was wondering what was wrong with my smokes! I noticed I have been getting dizzy and having nausa every time I smoke. I thought they were just old stale cigarettes. This weekend I was talking with a co-worker and he asked if I have noticed anything different about my cigarettes....I said yeah they taste awefull!! And he explained what he had read in the paper.
I have been smoking for 16 years now and have never felt sick after I smoke, but I do not feel good after I smoke now! I live in Teaxs as well, and it is not your allergies...ITS THE CIGARETTES!
I just want to know what chemical they are adding to get this "fire safe" cigarette that they are not telling us about and what side effects we are going to have!
Im thinking now is a good time to quit! I have been doing some looking around on the internet and found a smokeless cigarette, I dont know anything about it, But Im going to order one a see how it is! I found it at www.smoke51.com
who know if it will work or not but its better than feeling sick everytime I go for a smoke!

Fire Safe Cigarettes. . . .

I agree with everyone's comments. These cigarettes are quite rediculous! Now, I havn't had any experiences where I've burnt myself or anything else for that matter, however I have had instances where the cigarette does go out at random leaving me to inconveniently light it up again. I've also noticed the smells and the tastes. That's not even the worse part of it! I've been smoking cigarettes for about 5 years now and I smoke either Marlboro or Doral. NEVER have I had a health issue, other than the obvious, smoking these cigarettes. I randomly got sick with symptoms that of a cold. My head is aching, my nose is stuffy, my throat is scratchy, and my chest burns, I've even gotten nose bleeds TWICE! I figured, other than the nose bleeds, its just crazy Texas weather throwing my allergies outta whack. Then my husband told me about these new FSC. I did some research and BOOM! The source of my illness. Why on earth would anyone want to market something so crappy and horrible? ESPECIALLY without consulting us, the people, or even testing it for side effects theirselves. Does the govt honestly think we're that stupid? Because a smoker couldn't possibly have a degree, right?? Clearly we're not idiots here and if they knew what was good for them they would get rid of these disgusting cigarettes and bring the oldies back.
PS: If anyone knows which chemical they are putting into our cigarettes please let me know, yesenia.perez@beryl.net

Marlboros New Change

I have been smoking Marlboro Reds for about 2 years and my father has been smoking Marlboro lights for over 20 years and we both agree that these new "fire safe" cigarettes do more than prevent fires, they also cause health issues too! We have noticed lately, not only do our cigarettes put themselves out so fast you have to smoke like a freight train to keep them lit, they also have a terrible taste, leave you with a terrible cough, and sometimes make you sick to your stomach. There has got to more being done to these cigarettes than just adding some extra paper to them to make them "fire safe", and we as consumers have a right to know what exactly it is that is being added with the extra bands of paper. We are interested to hear from anybody that is having similar problems. I can be reached at smith13rs2@aol.com or at smith13rs2003@yahoo.com. If you agree with us, please contact us.

Roll your own!
By Jim Kay on Dec 29, 2008 11:27:35 AM
I've smoked on and off for about 45 years. When commercial cig prices went up about a year ago, I decided to investigate home-made smokes. There are two methods: Roll the paper, or use an injector and pre-rolled tubes. The tubes come with or without filters. I use regular rolling paper and cheap hand rollers, that wear out after a few months. I use a popular pipe tobacco that used to come in a can and was the subject of telephone pranks when I was a kid. Great smoke! I get the tobacco, papers and replacement rollers mail order. It now costs me about $1.00 for 20. You can get most of the supplies at a Wal-Mart, but mail order is cheaper, even with shipping added. For one thing, the Federal tax on bulk tobacco is less than on cigarettes, and there are no state taxes (assuming the merchant is in another state).
There are so many places I need to spend time where I can't smoke, that I also buy "hard snuff," little lozenges you put in between your jaw and gums, that release nicotine, but don't make you spit.

As with the majority here I and my wife have also noticed the health issues. At first we though it was just stale cigarettes but soon learned about the FSC. Our throats are scratchy, we have an annoying cough, and general feeling of unwellness. Alot of the things you read state there are no extra chemicals added for this FSC but how else do you explain the medical issues that not just one or two people are having. I have noticed when you hold the cigarette upward while lit it quickly forms a bubble of lemon colored liquid and when you try to smoke it after that forms everything but that spot stays lit. There has to be some kind of chemical not just extra strips of paper in these cigaretts and it is QUICKLY killing us all. We as smokers have lost all of our rights through out the years but being tricked into somoking pottentially lethal chemicals that were added to our cigaretts without our knowlege is inhumane and should be illegal!
If anyone is looking into a class action law suit I would like to stay informed and would participate in anyway possible.

First let me state "Is this some kind of a sick joke" My husband has been smoking Marlboro for twenty five years and we have never encountered such an awful taste that these new fire safe cigarettes leave in your mouth. Futhermore the smell of the cigarette is worse than the any generic cigarette. These new fire safe cigarettes do not extinguish like the old cigarettes and the cherry falls off the cigarettes. I have burned holes in my clothes, burned the truck seats and carpets in my home because of these fire safe cigarettes. These fire safe cigarettes are more of a fire hazard than the others could ever be. I constantly watch my husband when he smokes just to make sure that ashes are not falling off. By putting the fire safe cigarettes, you have taken away from the quality of the Marlboro. Whatever tests they did, it could not of included actual people who smokes. If someone falls asleep on the rode while driving and accidently kills someone are you going to ban people from driving? This is just stupid. All this is is someone that just has to much time on thier hands and just want s to find something to complain about. It is not the cigarette company's fault that people die, it is people's irresponsibility that are smoking. Let be the first to say that if something is not done to stop these FIRE SAFE CIGARETTES,THERE IS GOING TO BE ALOT MORE FIRES AND EVEN DEATH.

Fire - safe cigarettes: a hazard to MY health
By Tiffany Prokop on Dec 10, 2008 3:43:36 PM
These fire safe cigarettes are a far cry from "safe". Since I started smoking these new so-called "safe" cigarettes I have either burned myself or been burned by another multiple times. I have also been nauseous and have even vomited after smoking (which has never happened to me before). Is this some kind of trick to turn us all into non-smokers by physically injuring us with burns from the large, loose ashes that form at the end of the cigarette or inducing illness?! If so, this is a direct violation of free will!
The state can limit where I smoke (PA recently passed a smoking ban) however if I choose to enjoy a cigarette in my home I shouldn't have to worry about my hand, arm, or clothes being burned nor becoming ill after I finish!
What I want to know is where was OUR say in this?!

FSC - different is NOT better
By Loyal Gifford on Dec 10, 2008 1:45:56 PM
Why was this pushed thru with very little media attention. Yes, it is a nasty habit and if a person does smoke with little concern for others, there would be a problem. That is why you enact laws to restrict the LOCATIONS where smoking is allowed.
Since I smoke less than 15 cigarettes a day, I am not plagued with the sore throat but it does seem to get raw more often than prior to the FSC. Yes, it is Fire Safe only if it is in an ashtray. Just holding it in your hand and it will go out rather quickly. Relight it and take a puff, look at the end and it has gone out, again. Relight again and now the dead part has swollen up and is a big glowing ember, ash is handing out in all directions. You constanly have to watch the ashe/glowing end (if it is still lit) to see that it does not fall, even in a no wind condition.
Besware that if the ash does fall, the ash will NOT GO OUT on its own, but light up and burn then area where it landed.
The government has made a product (by enacting laws) that was only unhealthy into a product that cost more, is even more unhealthy and is now dangerous and fire prone. Good way to treat the tax payers.
I only go out and have a smoke to relax, to get some peaces and quiet. Much like some people who relax with a cigar or a pipe. These new cigarettes also only burn 6-8 minutes (100's) instead of the 8-10 minutes before. They taste weaker, dryer and emit more smoke plumes. There should be a limit on just how many regulations a 'freedom of choice' person can have and still be considered a 'freedom of choice'.
Who made the big money pushing this regulation/law thru?

We thought that we had obtained some really old cigarettes. They tasted really stale and aweful. It didn't take us long to realize that they were FSC. These cigarettes are not only bad tasting, but they are also dangerous to our health even more so than the cigarettes themselves. I didn't know that the carton that I bought was FSC and after about the fifth pack, I started to have nose bleeds. After a night's work in the truck, we have also noticed a hoarsness in our voice. You cannot tell me that you haven't put a chemical in these so-called FSC. I have heard some talk about Sodium Silicate. This is a Corrosive Placarded Hazmat solution. It is not to be inhaled. May cause irritation to the respiratory. Why in the world would you do this to us???? You haven't even tested these so-called FSC. I know that you have also had responses about the cherries of the cigarettes falling off. The paper flies off the cigarette when lit. This is not a solution to a problem. This is only another problem that is going to be encountered by any and all smokers.

Smokers Easy Target to Justify Worthiness of Legislators

It's easy for the legislators to make and pass regulations concerning cigarettes! Why not focus on some more important issues that can positively affect ALL Americans??? That would take some real work!!! Why arenât there cures for say cancer or diabetes??? Our Government throws away billions and trillions of dollars to the wealthiest businesses flying around on private jets and enjoying spa treatments while the majority of Americans wonder how they will fill their prescriptions that they will DIE without????
Fire Safe, nice try I guess, but; like many others have said the paper on these cigarettes fall off in large pieces that are ON FIRE and the whole cherry sometimes DISAPPERS...I've found mine burning a hole in the kitchen floor but hey THE CIGARETTE WASN'T BURNING.
What Chemical is in the extra layer of paper???
There is definitely something added because they taste terrible and make me nausea. So when all the smokers get sick from this hidden ingredient...do we sue the tobacco companies...I think not...I think the legislators that past these laws should be responsible!!

I concur with the popular voices that they do taste worse than ever. FSC Cigarettes...

I have been smoking for over seventeen years. About the last sixteen of that have been spent on Camels. When they changed their cigarettes to the FSC paper, they also changed their blend to enclude Turkish tobacco. I smoked a couple of cartons and just assumed it was the new tobacco that made them taste stronger... Boy, was I wrong! I then heard about the FSC paper garbage that was sneaked into our cigarettes. Seeing as I light a cigarette and don't put it down until I've smoked the whole thing, I never experienced one going out on me. Uppon hearing about the FSC paper, I immediately put it to the test. Here's what my tests concluded: The cherry frequently falls off the cigarette. The cigarette only goes out when you're holding it in your hand. If you light one up and drop it on the floor, it will continue to burn all the way to the filter. They burn your throat, give you headaches, make you naucious, make you sick to your stomach. And for the love of GOD, don't ever try to smoke one right after another! So, after two cartons of the FSC Camels, I switched to Marlbros, which I smoke occassionally. I noticed right away the flavor was different, and my "sick feelings" remained. I then switched to Kamel Reds which don't have the FSC yet, and all my symptoms went away! What the ****$ does that tell you!?!?!?

I have been a smoker for 22 years. When NY came out with these stupid rules, I did try the cig. I found that I cough & produce more phlegm, I have more chest congestion, I have migraines all the time, from the time I wake in the morning til I go to bed, my brain feels hazy & in turn makes it harder for me to function. They also taste gross & they give me a sore throat. They also make me want to vomit. So, I decided to get my cigs from anywhere except NY. I traveled to the Indian reservations, only to discover they sell NY cigs. Waste of a trip for me, I didn't buy there. I am not allowed to purchase them online because they say it's against the law. So, I have been getting mine from PA. Just last week, I noticed that they tasted funny. Lo & behold, PA has jumped on the bandwagon. So, now pretty much, the surrounding states are in on this. Ohio, here I come. I do not care that I will have to make it a day trip, as it will take me six hours to get there.
I knew years ago the risk I was taking when I decided to light up. Now, the nonsmoking idiots get to kill me even quicker.
As for it being a fire safety. Let me enlighten all you nonsmokers & fire people, it does not work. All you gotta do is light the cig, if at any time you put it in the ashtray, make sure that the filter is touching a surface so that it's angled (not straight across, but up in the air) & the cig will not, I repeat WILL NOT GO OUT AT ANY TIME. It will continue to burn all the way to the filter. It may still taste nasty, but, I don't have to relight it.
I have tried to quit. First, I tried the patch. All it did was give me a skin rash. Then, I tried the lozenge. The first one was fine, the second one made me vomit. So, I went the medical route & tried the Chantix. The first month went great. The second month, however, did not work so well. Because the meds cost me over $200 I did not have it for the fifth week, so I went with out. I bought them on the sixth week, so they redid the starter pack. Needless to say, it didn't work this time. They also cost me more than smoking my cigs. Lets see, $200 versus $120.

I was in Massachusetts when the law went into effect over New Year's. I'd never heard of the change and was grateful we didn't have that in Illinois because I got sick. Unfortunately, I returned to Chicago to discover the law had gone into effect there, also. For me, the symptoms are extra chest congestion. Fire retardant cigarettes
By Kim Shields on Sep 3, 2008 3:54:17 AM
Smoking cigarettes, we all know itâs harmful and can ruin our health. We all make our own choices to smoke or not. Nobody forces us to smoke, itâs a conscience decision we make for our selves. We understand the ramifications of our smoking, lung cancer, heart problems, birth defects to name a few. Now each state has decided to add to that list by adding some new fire retardant to our cigarettes without even informing us of its existence. Just one day my cigarettes start going out for no reason and they taste a lot harsher, for a while I thought I was going losing my mind. My favorite cigarette company would never change the most popular brand and not tell me, would they? I come to find that not only did they change them and every other cigarette brand but it was government enforced. I donât remember voting on this let alone hearing about this ever being considered. Why was my first question? First I heard it was to prevent forest fires, which is interesting because California had put it in effect several months before it had all those huge forest fires from Malibu to San Diego. So if that were the reason it didnât work! Then I heard it was for people falling asleep with lit cigarettes and burning down houses or apartments with the structures adjacent to them, that brought about the change. Recently, I heard a story of a man that fell asleep with a cigarette but luckily woke soon after to find his mattress on fire beneath him. The fire was put out without any further damage except to the mattress, again the fire retardant rings in are cigarettes not doing the job it was meant to!
Let me tell you the job it does do, it ****es me off having to relight my cigarette sometime 5 times just to smoke one cigarette thatâs if im not constantly taking a drag off it. I mean it goes out right in my hand. Another thing those little fire retardant rings do, they burn uneven and hotter then fall off on to my hand or desk or even my carpet which now have burns in them, I never had that problem before! One more thing how much research was done on this fire retardant, how many rats were put into plexiglass cages filled with smoke from these new cigarettes, subjected to this for months on end and were later tested for cancer had it increased from the finding of regular cigarettes or was there no research done on the subject? We are just smokers anyway, that dirty habit you non smokers would like done away with altogether and besides you can just sue Phillip Morris again 10 years down the line and get a bunch of money to spend on anything you want, anything but health care for smokers...
So in closing, since none of the reasoning behind putting the fire retardant in our cigarettes is valid and no research has probably been done on the possible health problems it can cause for us smokers. I myself, would like it if we could go back to old cigarettes, with those at least we knew what we were getting in our cigarettes, and what could happen if we choose to smoke...

Okay. I can honestly say i have been a smoker since before i was 18. I am 23 now, and i have NEVER had a smokers cough since these stupid FSC came around. EVER. I also notice headaches, sore throats, all that crap. Not to mention my sofa, and car seats are pock marked with burns from the burning FSC paper falling off all over the place. The paper does not sufficiently turn into ash like it should, instead it hangs there until you flick it hard enough for the whole cherry to fall out and burn whatever you are near, usually my hand gets burned from these. I hate them, they taste horrible, they smell bad, and they MUST have increased health risks. Like i said, never had a smokers cough until i noticed i had to re light constantly and avoid ashing near furniture. There was nothing wrong with cigarettes the way they have been for the past 100 years. Why suddenly decide that it is SO IMPORTANT all of a sudden that it HAS TO be enforced?? Why not sell FSC as an option, like the choice between a hard and soft pack? That way the company is covered when Drunky McDrunkpants burns down his living room because he knowingly CHOSE to buy non FSC. IF you are that worried about fires, request a pack of fire safe marlboros at the counter. It is the ideal solution, and i think it is in everyone's best interest to propose this to some higher power. I sure as **** have enough confidence that i know the difference between an ashtray and a pile of dry newspapers enough to not require these so called "fire safe cigarettes"/

I suggest you and everyone else that is feed up with these FSC's do as i did, I have written the local papers, Ap,news stations,Governor, attorney general and the president! The non smoker that made a comment of where are her rights, well let me tell you, you have more rights then smokers do,smokers have been addicted to cigarettes by our own government, for years they came in "C" and "K" rations, if you wanted a break in the military, you had a smoke break, or you had to police the area! As workers in the us, you had smoke breaks which were extra breaks! Cigaretes were cheap because the US Government subsidized tobacco farmers! If the cigarette companies would put pure unadulterated tobacco in cigarettes there would be less problems! As far as the Harvard report, they state that these new cigarettes are 13% more hazardous to smokers, so they can cause many more problems then before! I say that all smokers need to write to those mentioned, start an online petition, call the ACLU!!!!

I see "unAmerican" "communist" "violates your rights" blah, blah, blah.
Cigarette companies have been putting chemicals in your cigarettes for years to keep you hooked. Now non-smokers like myself have to put up with pounds of toxic chemicals being put in new mattresses by federal decree to protect some 250 smokers a year who go up in flames, probably half of them drunken fools. Where are my rights? When are you going to wake up and realize big corporations run this country and own every politician in it.

I think the fsc cigarette law is ridiculous. If people are so stupid as to smoke in bed or lying down then they deserve what they get. I personally only smoke sitting or standing (normal right?) The fsc cigs seem to be more of a fire hazzard because while your smoking them the band of paper doesn't burn correctly and falls onto your lap or floor which to me is VERY dangerous. Also they go out if you stop dragging on them for more than 20 seconds. Most people don't drag on their smokes on a consistent basis. I am seriously going to stop buying these cigs and roll my own or maybe even quit. Then what would they raise the tax on every month or so? Beer? I think not.......

By Steve Geissinger, SACRAMENTO BUREAU
Inside Bay Area
SACRAMENTO â A bill by Democratic lawmakers that is aimed at making cigarettes more fire
safe â but would make them potentially more dangerous to smokers' health â faces its last key
hurdle in the Legislature today.
The Assembly bill, set for a Senate hearing and then likely swift final approval, has advanced without
discussion of data buried in a Harvard School of Public Health study this year that shows fire-safe
cigarettes contain at least 10 percent more of two harmful ingredients.
At the same time, recent state fire statistics indicate the measure may not be crucial to preventing
deaths of smokers or firefighters due to longtime household fire-proofing rules and other factors.
Nationally, activists have tied hundreds of deaths to unattended cigarettes.
The legislation, which would ban the sale of traditional cigarettes starting next year, also could cost the
deficit-ridden state millions in tax revenue as smokers dodge higher California cigarette prices by
making purchases on the Internet or elsewhere, according to state tax officials.
The measure â principally authored by Assemblywoman Wilma Chan, D-Oakland, and
Assemblyman Paul Koretz,
D-West Hollywood â mimics legislation adopted by New York and under consideration in a handful
of other states with support from health and public safety groups.
While some U.S. cigarette makers have remained neutral on the California bill, others have opposed
it, citing costs and other problems.
But Koretz said that "we now know that not only are these cigarettes easy to manufacture, but they
are as acceptable to consumers as regular cigarettes."
"How many more lives must be lost before other states gain access to safer cigarettes," Koretz said,
referring to out-of-state lawsuits over the issue and other legal battles involving the tobacco industry.
The Harvard report on fire-safe cigarettes shows in complex tables that levels of carbon monoxide â
related to heart disease â and naphthalene â linked to cancer â are boosted the most when
manufacturers use special, banded paper that slows burning, which is helpful when a cigarette is left
unattended.
Carbon monoxide is boosted by 11.4 percent and naphthalene by 13.9 percent. Other carcinogens,
such as fluorine, are increased by about 6 percent.

Fire "Safe?" Cigarettes

How sad, indeed, that once again our government has taken a chemical head turn at the production of fire safe cigarettes. They apparently are not human safe, or I would not get so sick when smoking them.
Smoking is MY choice, just as drinking alcohol and driving seems to be the choice of most of our elected officials and politicians who hold office. I do not believe that cigarettes are the number one cause of home fires anymore than I still believe all the previous propaganda about them being the number one cause of cancer in America; which was also shoved down our throats, incorrectly, and without choice or forewarning..
The old rule seems to apply here too:

I, unfortunately, am an addicted smoker.
Back in the 90's the federal and state governments won multi-billion dollar judgments against tobacco companies for adding chemicals to make cigarettes more addictive. The medical industry lauded, supported, and testified to further these lawsuits. The one thing NOT ONE of these entities did do, is demand removal of all the chemicals! They are still in cigarettes. Now we can add the detrimental effects that will surely come from FSC legislation. Our government and the medical industry must be viewed as nothing less than hypocrites until they demand removal of any and all chemical additives to cigarettes! They DO NOT have anyone's health concerns at heart, as they would have us believe. I have tried multiple times to quit with little or no success. Until, I am given a fair playing field and am smoking ONLY tobacco, I don't think I will have much chance of quitting. All the medical community offers me is cramming even more (very expensive) chemicals into my body in the false hope that it will counter all the other chemicals that are at work to enhance my physical and mental addictions. THE AGENDA HERE IS MONEY AND NOTHING ELSE. THEIR CLAIMS OF CONCERN FOR THE HEALTH OF AMERICANS IS OBVIOUSLY FALSE! IT IS TIME FOR A SMOKER'S CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY, FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENTS, AND THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY.

Let me just start off by sayingI understand that smokers get no sympathy about cigarette problems. We are people too and this is our choice to smoke. The problem is that no one was informed about the change until after it happened. These cigs are not fire safe, but actually are fire starters. At any given moment a piece of inflamed paper can fly off and burn you or anything around you. These FSC cigs are far more dangerous than the original cigs were. You are trying to prevent fire, but in all actuality are definitely causing it. This may not be a "smokers right", but does the government have the right to poison us and force us all to quit. We know smoking is not good for us but neither is a flaming torch of chemicals that we have no idea of what it is. Get rid of the Fire Starting Cigarettes, Please!
Some of us never smoke in bed and I am tired of trying to dodge the flying debris from these FSC cigarettes while I'm driving. The other thing is that they don't always go out when they are supposed to. Bad Idea People!!

i'm 41 yrs. old & have been a light smoker for over 20 yrs. (about a 1/2 pack a day). i've never smoked in bed or burned any holes in my carpeting, clothes or car upholstry. i haven't experienced any health problems from smoking.
since these "fire safe cigaettes" were forced on smokers by our state government, i now have burn holes in all of these. i also have been burned on my hands, wrists and arms. one burn on my arm was serious enough to require medical attention. fire safe cigarettes are more dangerous to consumers than their predecessors ever were. the tobacco companies and their lobby claim that the only difference in these cigarettes are extra bands in the paper. extra paper alone would not make these cigarettes taste so horribly different or cause all of the health problems people are experiencing. the tobacco companies must be adding some type of chemical to their products. the manufacturers will not reveal the ingredients of these fire safe cigarettes. the FDA has mandated that all consumable products post a list of their ingredients on their label. why are cigarettes and other tobacco products exempt from this federal mandate?
the lawmakers of the state of illinois passed this legislation behind closed doors with no opinion polls or a vote on the issue. the tax paying citizens of illinois weren't told anything about this. this is a slap in the face to all the taxpayers. there's no doubt in my mind that the insurance lobby is behind this new legislation. i wonder how many of our politicians received campaign contributions from them?
the state of illinois has one of the highest tax rates in the country, yet our state is broke and very likely facing bankruptcy. for many years our state government has wasted money and misappropriated funds. some state officials have been convicted of crimes and sent to prison. not nearly enough of them though. not long enough sentences either.
until the election process is changed and lawmakers stop taking their orders from big business, this will only get worse.
it's time for the taxpaying citizens of illinois to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
if there is a class action lawsuit filed against the state of illinois and/or the tobacco companies, you can bet that i will take part in it.
these supposed "fire safe cigarettes" have damaged my home, my car, my clothes and my health.
someone needs to be held accountable for all of the damages being caused by these cigarettes.

Harvard study was never tested on smokers, and they did not tell what else was in the cigarettes, they stated that the tobacco companies would not reveal the ingrediants in the cigarettes! Bull! Anything that is ingested into the body has to have a list of ingrediants! These cigarettes are causing smokers to have to continuously puff on them to keep them lit, thus more of the "so called" harmful effects of the cigarettes are ingested, they cause shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, dizziness, and a whole lot more! They are robbing smokers of oxygen ! So, what else is in them? I urge the 26,000,000 plus smokers to stop the sale of these cigarettes immediately! I don't mind that people want to make homes safer by cutting down on housefires caused by cigarettes. But come on! He's suffering because Congress didn't think about other chemicals or ways to test this FSC-theory? I find this highly wrong and I'm sure that its affecting more than just him.

I too have burned clothes by the cherry falling off. This happened while driving. I am, so far, accident free for the last 29 years, but who is going to pay when I smash my car while trying to extinguish my clothing. I thought at first that I didn't "pack" them, but it continues to happen. I do not like being forced to smoke these new cigarettes by a bunch of people who don't smoke at all. ENOUGH ALREADY. Smokers have been put through the ringer. Now we are being poisoned? I'm all for the class action suit, protests, letter writing campaigns, etc. Just let me know what I need to do.

By eileen Augatis on Jun 8, 2008 8:36:46 AM
What the hell did you do to the cigarettes? I was told that you had to change them to reflect a law passed because too many idiots were falling asleep and burning down their houses.
As any mother would tell you...If you play with fire, you're gonna get burnt. Well, if people light them and fall asleep, then they deserve what they get. What are they going to do next...eliminate fireplaces from people's homes, stoves or pota n pans from those who forget they are cooking?
Since they have changed the formula...let me tell you something. I have burnt 3 pairs of pants and a new blouse because these damned things go out in the middle of one's smoking. You take a puff and the cigarette goes crazy and then the cherry falls off in your lap. I have never burnt myself or my clothes before. How is it that it goes out while smoking and yet still burns away when in the ash tray?
I work hard for my money. Is it not enough that the prices are outrageous-yet I have remained a loyal marlboro customer?
Why would you knowingly sabotage a product? Whatever you guyz did has ruined the taste, the fullness of the draw..where's the rush? It's making me think really hard about quitting.
I'm letting you know as a concerned smoker that I am not happy with your new improved version of your product. I am letting you know that the group of us now forced outside to take our breaks-are not happy.
What gives?

Since when have fires from cigarettes been an issue in New Jersey? It is humid here EVERYDAY! These are absolutely disgusting! I inhale LESS smoke and it makes my chest and throat hurt. I have a doctor's appointment this week to quit because they are just not enjoyable to smoke. And to answer someone's question, I smoke parliament, so it's not just marlboro. Well, I hope the government realizes how much money they are going to lose, and it will affect them. This has ruined everything about the cigarette that smokers enjoy so much. I guess it was time to quit anyway, it will just be easier now.

Two days ago, I opened a new carton of cigarettes & proceeded to smoke one. It tasted funny & kept going out. My husband & I both decided that maybe the carton had been damaged or something - maybe they were old? All the next day, I smoked very little - they taste like c**p. We found out from a co-worker that they were some of the new Fire Safe Cigarettes. We've never even heard of it!
Fortunately, we live in MO, so it's not mandatory here yet. I'm going to my store this morning to find some that aren't FSC.
I agree with some of the other posters - just what's in these new cigarettes? Is it only extra paper - I don't think so. Whatever is in them, it wasn't there before. When the time comes that I can't find non FSC cigarettes, I'll quit - they're that nasty.
Phillip-Morris take note - your revenue is about to take a major nosedive!

forcing us to smoke a chemical is going to cause just as many deaths as careless fires??
By MARY HANLEY on Jun 6, 2008 9:16:00 AM
I to didnt hear anything about these new FSC's untill i started noticing my cigarettes not burning coorectly- i to almost brought them back to the store thinking there was something wrong.
This is absolutely ridiculous!! I mean these things taste terrible, im sure they are not safe to be smoking, and ya we all know smoking is bad to begin with and will sooner or later kill ya. But tobacco should be smoked all natural - its enough that the big cigarette companies are allowed to add all these chemical additives but now our government is requesting them to put in even more chemicals.??? And forcing us to smoke only cigarettes with this chemical.
This does not make sense to me.
People are already complaining of excessive weazing and chest pain or discomfort so Its only a matter of time before law suits start popping up across the country.
I have only been smoking these things for a couple of weeks and notice im weazing 10 times worst, it neve even dawned on me that this could be the reason why untill i read peoples comments - but the timing is right , and im young and otherwise healthy so there is no reason for this discomfort to be brought on so quickly.
If anyone hears of a class action law suit about this please contact me at mbhoakct76@yahoo.com. I am in CT.
Besides that it is noted everywhere that house fires caused by a cigarette were all actually caused by a careless person who fell asleep with the lit cigarette.....I dont know about you but how the hell do you sleep through a fire right next to you?? I sure wouldnt be able to. They should say passed out (not fell asleep) with a lit cigarette, and that comes down to a person just being stupid and careless- so if you make the cigarettes that person smokes firesafe- the next time their dumbas will fall asleep with food on the stove.
If its fires that we are trying to prevent here then our government also needs to ban stoves, clothes dryers, bbq grills, candles, incense, etc.. why dont we just get rid of electricity all together.
Or how about implementing laws on landlords forcing them to have heat alarms that noitify a fire department so when that careless person leaves food in the oven while they sleep - the fire can be caught early enough!
I buy a few packs of cigs a week and hand roll the rest just to save money- im curious if the tubes for hand rolling are also going to be fire safe?? As of now - they seem to burn just fine so the chemical is not yet being applied to those.

if 140800 fires are caused a year with 2400 being injured thats like 2% and thats rounding up and 900 deaths is a little more than half a percent. Thats is not a bad ratio if you think about it and if i was to fall asleep with a cigarette and get burned its my fault its not like im gonna blame it on the cigarette company like the people blammed mcdonalds for making them fat. I think this whole thing is about the fire fighter being lazy and wanting to do less work. Some one has to do something before its to late.

CLASS ACTION SUIT
By MARIO CAVALIERE on May 26, 2008 5:55:51 AM
Cigarette ignited fires accounted for an estimated 140,800 fires in the United States. Such fires cause more than 900 deaths and 2,400 injuries each year. More than $400 million in property damage reported is due to a fire caused by a cigarette. According to the National Fire Protection Association, one out of every four fire deaths in the United States are attributed to TOBACCO PRODUCTS
Thats bs they havent made any changes to any other tobacco products. I bet half of those stats were from cigars or pipes ect.
Lets do this class action suit we can probably get 10000 people in a fewdays and we can make some money and get rid of this fire safty cigarette stuff. According to the effects of the chemical they seem to be worse for us. Either way we hae strength in numbers we can sue or if not just start movement to stop more chemicals from being in our cigarettes

acrolein (Aqualin, Magnacide) Herbicide Profile 3/85
acrolein
CHEMICAL NAME: Z-propenal (56)
TOXICOLOGY
A. ACUTE TOXICITY
B. SUBACUTE AND CHRONIC TOXICITY:
No effect on rats fed water containing 200 ppm for 90 days (58).
Chronic effects of exposure to acrolein are skin irritation and
occasionally skin allergy appearing as hives or a rash (14).
IV. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
Field observations and laboratory datat show that fish vary
considerably in their tolerance to acrolein. Most fish are killed at
less than 1 ppm (58).
Acrolein will remain in the water for up to 6 days depending upon
water temperature (58).
V. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES
The chemical information provided below has been condensed
from original source documents, primarily from "Recognition and
Management of Pesticide Poisonings", 3rd ed. by Donald P. Morgan,
which have been footnoted. This information has been provided in
this form for your convenience and general guidance only. In
specific cases, further consultation and reference may be required
and is recommended. This information is not intended as a sub-
stitute for a more exhaustive review of the literature nor for the
judgement of a physician or other trained professional.
If poisoning is suspected, do not wait for symptoms to develop.
Contact a physician, the nearest hospital, or the nearest Poison
Control Center.
FREQUENT SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF POISONING:
HEADACHE, DIZZINESS, NAUSEA, and vomiting are prominent early
symptoms of excessive exposure to these gases. Acrolein is a strong
irritant causing BURNING SENSATIONS in the nose and throat, TEARING,
COUGH, and sometimes hoarseness and wheezing. DROWSINESS, TREMORS,
double vision, and weakness are the common early manifestations of
central nervous system impairment. Tremors may progress to myoclonic
movements, then to generalized SEIZURES, UNCONSCIOUSNESS, and death.
INHALATION: Remove victims of fumigant inhalation to fresh air.
Even though initial symptoms and signs are mild, keep victim quiet, in
a semireclining position. Reduction in physical activity reduces the
likelihood of pulmonary edema (25).

We, the consumers were made fools out of!! I am sure all of us who smoke are aware of the health risks, but it is still OUR CHOICE ! What is next ? Are we facing gasoline rationing? Can only drive 2 hours a day ? What is next???? And I find it hard to believe that the only dif with FSC is extra paper , these things have made me feel sick ! We all are aware of the chemicals in cigs , but what else is in them now???? I am going to start a petition in my state, I advise others to do the same. This is my vice and I dont feel the gov should regulate my good or bad personal habits. I am sure our states would miss that tax if we all boycott these things! Or is this a ploy to have us all stop smoking and give our money to all these pharmaceutical companies for "stop smoking aids" !How about other things that pose fire hazards, are they changing those? Stoves, wiring, chemicals, etc. We live in the USA , and as consumers have a right to choose and a right to know !!!!!!!!!!!! AS I said write to your state Rep , peoples opinions should be heard! Before I even knew that my brand had been altered, I began having headaches which I have never been prone to. The cigarettes had not tasted the same, and kept going out even after a minute or two. Now I understand why. My opinion is that the govt. is just using one more chemical to implode us. Smokers are more prone to chronic lung problems, so with these new additives, it will just serve to kill us faster and keep us from being useless eaters. I cannot tolerate this product in my cigarettes. This chemical is doing something to my system and it's not good. A class action lawsuit will be necessary to stop this. But then, the govt and big business will say that cigarettes are a luxury and we all choose to smoke. Well, we choose to eat meat also and are getting all kinds of crap in it too. It is probably some sort of experiment on us.

Yesterday, I called the tobacco company personally because, like other people, wondered what was going on with these cigarettes!!! NOW! Tomorrow, I am going to call the Reynolds company again to find THAT out, and, if they don't or won't tell me, it's Media time boys and girls!! They just can't add something to the cigarettes, which, COULD be potentually lethal without informing the smoking public!
And you no-smokers - don't be blaming "smoke related deaths" on the cigarettes!!! It takes a human to light one up! It also takes a human to pull the trigger on a gun to shoot oneself or someone else!! LOL! maybe we should ban HUMANS because tobacco and guns are harmless without us!! "Fire-Safe" Cigarettes
By T Sipple on Apr 14, 2008 1:15:38 PM
I had heard absolutely no news regarding these new cigarettes. Luckily I live in Ohio and these so called "fire-safe" cigarettes are not being sold here...yet. However, I have family in Kentucky and often go there to visit.. and to buy my smokes, as they are much cheaper in Kentucky. I smoke Marlboro Lights and could tell a difference immediately. I asked around about this and discovered what the difference was. My mother and I had bought a carton of these "fire-safe" cigarettes in KY, we each smoked a pack, and then went out and bought a carton of "real" cigarettes in OH. Everyone I know who has tried these new cigs hate them.
I do not often smoke off-brand cigs because they taste so dry and hurt my throat. These cigarettes are worse than ANY off-brand I've ever smoked (thats no exaggeration). After smoking a pack of them, my mother and I both had a sore throat and my throat was actually SWOLLEN and sore to the touch. (funny how they supposedly have no new health side-affects, yet everyone seems to get a sore throat after smoking them.) Not to mention the fact that they are harder to hit and go out too quickly. A person could go through a full Bic lighter on one pack of cigs becuase they have to be re-lit so often!
The concept of ""fire-safe" cigarettes is a good idea, however, if the consumers are not satisfied with them, then the idea is mute.
I went to the Phillip Morris website to complain, but they're contact page was down for construction, however I do plan to visit the page again, and call the customer comment phone number. I totally agree with the comments of GIGI.. We Need a Lawyer.
I ask all of you to call the customer comment number for your cig brand and let them know what you think of these so-called "fire-safe" cigarettes. If we don't complain, companies will continue to produce these disgusting cigarettes and it will be mandatory for all cigarettes in all states eventually... My mom and I even contemplated starting to roll our own smokes (even if we had to buy Marlboro and take the tobacco out of the cigs and re-roll them in regular paper) then the thought occured to me that eventually legislation will probably require rolling papers to be made the "fire-safe". I feel as if this is just another way to force people to quit smoking, which I feel should be a personal right of choice.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... help me FIGHT this. We must work together!

I feel the same as everyone else on this.
By Stephani Horan on Apr 13, 2008 3:03:33 AM
For a bit now I had noticed that my cigarette would burn out after less than a minute of not smoking it, I'd go to try to smoke it, after about 3 or 4 nasty puffs it'd relight, or I'd end up just having to relight it and try to not burn my hair, clothing or anything around me with all of the burning ashes that would fall into my lap. So for a week, I didn't think anything of it, then a co-worker mentioned it to me while I was dancing away from the burning ashes that were falling on me that now my marlboro's were "fire-safe". Of course I laughed at that considering that now most of my work clothing, not to mention the seats in my car have burn holes in them. Seemed funny how "fire-safe" cigarettes were actually catching me on fire. Not only that, after 2 packs of my new fire safe cigarettes, before I knew about that, I was waking up coughing up mucus that showed the signs of a sinus infection and would continue to cough my lungs up during the day. I went to my doctor over my increasing "sinus infection" over a 2 week period, after two weeks feeling more and more sick, I was diagnosed with pneunomia and had to take 3 weeks off of work to recover, inturn almost costing me my job. And the headaches...all I have to say about that is that should I end up in the ER due to the stomach ulcers that I'm going to incur from all the tylenol, I will be filing a lawsuit.
I agree that the concept is great. But why should we all suffer just because some people can't be responsible with their smoking habits?
Bottom line, I'm constantly sick on my stomach, coughing nasty stuff up, burning holes in my clothes, suffering from migraines, and experiencing the worst chest pains I have ever felt in my life.
I think that smoking regular cigarettes was left life threatening than that of the FSC ones.

Cars have wrecks! Mandate they can only build them to go the speed limit rather than making it a choice of the driver.
Drinking makes people drunk, drunk people are harmful to others and themselves! Mandate that all alcohol products must be made so they can't get drunk.
Guns kill people, but we want the right to carry arms. Mandate that the bullets explode in the chamber rendering them harmless.
Tornados kill people, mandate that homes are built that are tornado proof.
How about instead of a FSC ciggerette we have a FSH house, that way you wouldn't be discriminating against the rest of the world by only saving people that smoke from fires.

By Bill Cornelison on Apr 1, 2008 10:20:49 PM
Released just today, a seven car accident where 5 people were killed and 4 others injured when a normally responsible driver, (ie:having no citations of any kind or accidents in the last 11 years.) veered off the road and into the oncoming traffic while attempting to re-light his cigarette after it had extinguished itself.
Lawyers for the couple are working on a lawsuit naming the advocates of the FSC's themselves.
"Who are these people to put our lives in jeopardy by messing with a law abiding product, in such a way as to cause a drastic change in the normal use of the product?", was declared by one of the surviving persons from the accident. He went on to say he held no malice against the man re-lighting his cigarette that apperantly caused the accident. "This is America, he can smoke if he wants too."
More to follow as released.

FSC(Fire Safe Cigs)
By Brittany Adkins on Apr 1, 2008 6:30:04 PM
I am posting this on behalf on my mother and myself!! We are freakin Pissed.. These new cigs SUCK!! My mother has developed a hacking annoying cough, scrathcy throat and headaches as a result to the above..I myself have also developed a zit break out and migraines as a result of the new FSC
We want to know.. EXACTLY what has been added to the cigs or the wrapping paper.. We have investagated this throughly and we cannot find a definitive answer anywhere. We are really concerned for our health.. it is already almost impossible to quit because of all the chemicals added to the natural tobacco. Now you have added yet another chemical that has been approved without the proper research being conducted. SO WHAT NOW, IN TEN YEARS WILL THE REPORT COME OUT THAT THE NEW FSC ARE SUPER CARCINOGENIC!!!!!!!!!!!! WE WOULD REALLY APPERICATE A RESPONSE TO THIS COMMENT FROM OUR GOVERNMENT
Thank you!! from brittany and K!

FSC in cigarettes
By Donna Furmanek on Feb 27, 2008 12:14:51 PM
Not only do they burn and taste different, I should take out stock in aspirin...constant headaches. I also notice skin break-outs, something I have never been prone to in my life. As for me, I am starting to wonder if this fire retardant paper is safe for people. Kudos to preventing fires but I also have rights and I don't enjoy what I'm feeling since my brand has been changed to FSC. (btw...they are Parliments)

Nasty Smokes
By Michael Pfaff on Jan 29, 2008 10:35:33 PM
I was unaware of the fact the California was selling these supposed fire safe smokes. Good idea, but based on the responces and complaints of headaches and such I do have to wonder just how safe this new style smoke is. For what we pay in taxes just to smoke and all the laws about where to smoke, like here in Cali, can't they just leave the damn things alone. I mean seriously, living life comes with a little danger involved. Lets stop trying to put everyone in protective plastic bubble. If you are dumb enough to fall asleep with a lit smoke in your hands then it is the natural proecess of weeding out the stupid. Smoke smart not stupid. If it is that big of problem then lets try a little ad campaign or something rather than forcing someone who has already paid for the product and is not getting the product they were paying for.

FSC
By Michaelangelo Raimondi on Jan 24, 2008 5:42:16 PM
My girlfriend and I had noticed our cigarettes were burning out on their own quite frequently. This had been happening for quite awhile. Just today she heard from a co-worker about a 'chemical' being put in cigarettes to extinguish themselves. I decided to browse the internet and see what the fuss was all about. Well, to me...FSC is a phenomenal idea. My smokes taste no different than before I had noticed the label compared to after. To all you moaning about how we're being poisoned, shut up. You're all hypochondriacs reacting like the scared mob you are. Blame yourselves for once and not the Government. My girlfriend won't quit smoking. And she also won't stop falling asleep while she has on in her hand. But at least the FSCs are there to prevent anything drastic to happen. (Other than the cancer, of course). So, either quit smoking or quit bitchin'.

By Penny Mesch on Jan 6, 2008 3:28:08 PM
Well I just found out about this FSC crap lastnight, kind of explains the headaches Ive been havin for the last couple weeks! Another friend of mine is also experiencing the headaches and this is all we can come up with! I dont see anything safe about these, when i relit one the other day the whole dang cigarrette went up in flames almost catching my hair on fire! My husband is complaining of a scratchy throat and the headaches I have been havin are driving me insane! Are ALL brands doing this or just Marlboro? Time to quit or roll our own cause I am not paying this kind of money for garbage! Looks to me like its going to cost cigarette companies and the states in the long run when people stop payin for this crap! FSC = Fire Safe Cigarettes my butt more like Freakin Shi**y Cigarrettes!

Fire safe cigarettes
By Dorothy Knightly on Dec 4, 2007 8:25:48 AM
The new fire safe cigarettes are disgusting. They taste horrible, no matter what brand and they hurt your chest. That's just what we needed, more chemical's in cigarettes. What is the chemical? Has it been tested? Was this just a ploy to stop people from smoking? Can the Government afford to lose the Tax dollar's from cigarette smoker's? Why not put a new chemical in alcohol that disgust's drinker's? It's mainly the drunk's that fall asleep with cigarettes. Smoker's are alway's singled out. The Government can't leave well enough alone.

FSC CIGARETTES
By GIGI PATTERSON on Oct 26, 2007 9:52:12 PM
I'm a smoker and recently was made aware the states have forced cigarette companies to make FSC cigarettes (Fire Safety Cigarettes) so they go out on their own. I took a pack of cigarettes back to the store because I thought that were bad. They tasted funny. The clerk so "Oh Yeah they changed them".
There was NO ADVERTISING NO NOTICES NO MENTION of this until after the fact.
I realize smoking is not healthy however it is a personal choice. To have states demand that additional chemicals/ paper whatever be added so they go out on there own and NOT inform the public by all media means neccessary is just wrong. It's bad enough to be addicited but to had additional stuff added to the ciagettes to these FSC type cigarette work and not inform the public is just a class-action suit waiting to happen.
THE FACT IS THEY TASTE DIFFERENT AND THAT IS SUSPECT!!

Fire Safe Cigarettes
By Mark Cate on Oct 3, 2007 9:36:42 AM
I agree with the concept of fire-safe cigarettes but I don't believe that adequate studies were done to prove the technology is safe to the smoking consumer. With Marlboro's (my brand)in particular there is a bad smell when the cigarette goes out which leads me to believe that the asserion that there is only a slight increase in tar is incorrect. I also developed a 'scratchy' throat after smoking only two cartons, since NH just barely implemented the law. We are used to cigarette companies lying to us but now even consumer groups are getting into the act to push their own agenda. I will probably have to change brands to find one that I don't react so negatively to.
Its pretty sad that legislatures think its okay to poison smokers while at the same time increasing taxes to fund everything except cancer research and health care for smoking consumers. The best legislation would be one that gets the tobacco companies to return to the lower nicotine tobacco of past generations instead of the genetically engineered tobacco with higher nicotine content. Then maybe most of us would have a better success rate when we do try to quit without having to use the dangerous drugs they are now promoting. Quitting is the best cure all for reducing cigarette related fires.
