Legislatures: before and after

Three states put their entire legislatures up for election Tuesday (Nov. 6). Democrats flipped control of legislative chambers in Virginia and Mississippi on Election Day and made gains in four of the six chambers with seats on the ballot, including adding one seat to their majority in the New Jersey Senate although they lost two seats in the Assembly.

Louisiana legislators are also up for election this year, but those contests will not be decided until runoff races are held on Saturday, Nov. 17.

All results below are based on preliminary information from state elections offices.

The seventh annual Hal Hovey Award was presented Feb. 3 to Marc Perrusquia, an enterprise and investigative reporter for The Commercial Appeal, the daily newspaper in Memphis Tenn. The award is made jointly by Stateline.org, which is part of the Pew Center on the States, and Governing Magazine for outstanding coverage of state and local government.
