A new, limited-edition CD features Alabama Attorney General Troy King singing a duet with the late, great Johnny Cash. King, a music buff, dubbed his voice over a previously unreleased Cash recording, creating a duet version of the song “My Elusive Dream.” The CD, a Christmas gift for 25 of the law enforcer’s closest friends and supporters, includes a superimposed cover photo of Cash — in black, of course — and King wearing a button-down shirt and tie, according to the (Mobile) Press-Register.
Current North Carolina law bans state officials from accepting Christmas cards from lobbyists. So when some received cards this Christmas, they asked Gov. Mike Easley (D) what to do. Buy stamps and mail them back, he said. But, he added, the law “doesn't say you have to do it right away. Maybe you could wait until next Christmas," The (Raleigh) News & Observer reports Easley saying.
Colorado Rep.-elect Douglas Bruce, who was appointed to fill a vacancy in the House, appears to be going out of his way to miss his own swearing-in this week when the 2008 legislative session kicks off. Colorado law limits legislators to serving a total of four terms. So his leisurely drive to Denver this week, which puts off his swearing-in until Monday, means he can still serve four more terms, according to The Pueblo Chieftan.
If the Green Bay Packers win the NFL playoff game, Wisconsin Gov. James Doyle (D) gets some prize-winning Washington state cheese. If they lose to the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) gets a shipment of Wisconsin’s best bratwurst. That’s according to a bet Gregoire made with Doyle, The Seattle Times reports.
First-term Arizona state Rep. Chad Campbell (D) thinks lawmakers propose too many bills. His solution: limit them to no more than 10 per session. Senior Republican Rep. Marian McClure — who sponsored 50 bills last session — offered a counter proposal. "If we wanted to limit the number of bills, we could say freshmen couldn't introduce bills until they have some actual experience," the Arizona Daily Star reports her saying.
Don’t be confused. “I am Legend” is actor Will Smith’s latest movie; “I am Legendary” is North Dakota’s new tourism slogan. Whether fortunate or unfortunate, it’s a coincidence, says the state tourism director. The new marketing message, which had been in the works since early last Fall, was announced only weeks after the No. 1 box office hit opened, The Forum in Fargo reports.
The wheels of justice ground to a halt this week when a Wisconsin prosecutor showed up in court wearing a red ascot, instead of the mandatory tie. Circuit Judge William Sosnay halted the proceedings for about three hours, telling the attorney his neck wear bordered on “contemptuous,” The Associated Press reports.
