Gov. Bob Riley (R) called on lawmakers to expand preschool, cut taxes and pass ethics reform in his Feb. 7 speech before a politically split Legislature.
The governor repeated his plea to ban practices like moving campaign contributions among political action committees and “double dipping” — holding an elected office along with a government job. He also called for lobbyists to register with the state and file ethics reports.
Riley asked for a tax cut for low- and middle-income families to stimulate the economy, as well as a tax cut for small businesses that offer employees health insurance.
His education budget includes a $20 million increase to triple the number of children in the state’s pre-kindergarten program.
Riley also said he would push to provide Internet service in rural areas with the goal of universal access in the next four years. He also announced plans for a statewide water assessment.
