As Oklahoma celebrates its Centennial year, Gov. Brad Henry (D) laid out his proposals to boost public education by adding five days to the school year, raising teacher pay and adding graduation coaches to lower high school dropout rates.
Henry, in his second term, also asked the Republican-controlled Legislature to increase the requirements for physical education in the schools to help combat childhood obesity.
During his Feb. 4 address, the governor also urged a 5 percent raise for state employees. Transportation funding also should be a priority and the Sooner State needs $2 billion over the next decade to improve the state's roads and bridges in order to boost economic prosperity, Henry said.
