Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue (R) called for a $1.2 billion stimulus package, to be funded by bonds, to pay for building projects that he estimates would create 20,000 construction jobs.
During his state of the state address Jan. 14 before the Republican-controlled General Assembly, Perdue also presented two budgets: one for the next fiscal year, and one to revise the current year’s, because tax revenues are short of expectations. For the current year, Perdue asked for cuts of $2 billion, and he presented a $20.2 billion budget for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1.
His plan relies on tapping the state’s rainy day fund to the tune of about $237 million to shore up this year’s budget and $400 million for next year.
Perdue also asked that the state pay for Medicaid and a trauma care system by taxing hospitals and health insurance plans 1.6 percent and by raising fines on those who drive 15 miles over the speed limit.
