Stateline.org is a nonprofit, nonpartisan online news site that practices journalism in the public interest by reporting on emerging trends and issues in state policy and politics.

Each weekday, Stateline.org’s staff of professional journalists chronicles the top developments in all 50 states. We then connect the dots through our original reporting and graphics to spot and analyze developments of national significance taking shape in the states. Our goal is to enlighten public debate on topics of importance at the state level, including health care, taxes, immigration, social policy, education, energy, environment, criminal justice, homeland security, transportation and elections.

Stateline.org has published each weekday since Jan. 25, 1999, with funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts, an independent nonprofit organization that applies the power of knowledge to solve today’s most challenging problems. In the face of shrinking news coverage of state government, the Trusts launched the project to enhance understanding of critical public policy developments in state capitals among the public, policymakers and news media.  On July 1, 2008, Stateline.org officially became a project of the Pew Center on the States (PCS), a division of the Trusts.

PCS identifies and advances effective policy approaches to critical issues facing states. It researches emerging topics, develops 50-state comparisons, and highlights innovative approaches among states to complex problems. When the facts are clear, PCS advocates for nonpartisan, pragmatic solutions.

Stateline.org will not engage in PCS’ advocacy work. We will remain editorially independent and committed to the highest standards of journalistic excellence and integrity. Stateline.org’s integration into PCS will allow us to tap into  PCS’ research and analytical resources to deepen our reporting and identify additional story opportunities. Stateline.org staff will help inform PCS’ efforts to explore new topics and identify innovative approaches in state policymaking. Editorial decisions on Stateline.org’s content are made by its editors. Our original news stories and graphics are available online for free and are viewed by hundreds of thousands of journalists, policymakers, researchers, educators and ordinary citizens interested in the best coverage and information on state-level issues. Syndication agreements mean that Stateline.org content also can be found on LexisNexis, Factiva and news outlets served by the McClatchy-Tribune Information Services.

We also periodically publish printed reference materials that are free for the asking, including a “State of the States” report released every January. Stateline.org was instrumental in helping launch and nurture CapitolBeat, the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors, which holds professional workshops for the news media.

Stateline.org is led by Executive Editor Gene Gibbons, a former White House correspondent for Reuters; Managing Editor Barbara Rosewicz, a former Washington, D.C., and foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal; and Deputy Managing Editor Diane Fancher, former state editor of the Baltimore Sun. Managing Director of the Pew Center on the States, Susan K. Urahn, oversees Stateline.org’s operations and will sit on Stateline.org’s journalism advisory board.

Stateline.org is based in Washington, D.C.
